      Lets be honest, its unlikely.

BUT saying that, with Kenny and the pull of Liverpool FC anything is possible.

The lad has expressed an interest in the past and said if he did play in the Prem. LFC would be his choice, I really couldn't put a time scale on that and it may have been when Rafa was here. It is known that he respects Rafa who at the very least, would point Villa in the right direction.

Doubtful as he wud be too expensive and his wage demands too high for player his age. Only way is take him wud be 6month loan with option to buy, he helps fire us into champions league then we look to invest in someone younger.6month loan also shudnt over demoralise Carroll

Saw that myself earlier. It does seem strange that this story/rumour keeps appearing. He would be a great addition to the team but, it's probably just more lazy journalism.

We've missed our chance to get him let's be honest.

Along with Silva, we could have had him if the funds were there.

Everything points towards a transfer except for his age. Then again Bellamy was the same way.

I wonder just how true are the stories about him being unhappy at the way he is not the main striker at Barca and that Messi is and all that craic.

      He's Pepe's best buddy.

Whether we go in for him or not, is a different matter but I'm pretty sure he would relish the opportunity to play alongside Pepe and for one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Personally I'm glad this one keeps rearing its (ugly) head.

Either it's a goer, or a non starter, no sh*t I hear you cry, but why not?

I appreciate the owners have an age policy, and Villa is outside that policy, but if he can sell the shirts, bring in the sponsorship, and deliver the goods on the pitch, then why the hell not?

      Dare to dream.

Nah mate, there is no similarities between Villa and Torres situation, one had been promised the world, whilst the club was being asset stripped and out of europe and contention for the league, the other plays for the current Spanish and European champions.

When Villa says he's happy there i'm inclined to believe him, even more so given that Guardiola rubbished the initial story immediately and said it was pure fabrication and what was supposed to be the initial source denied even printing it.

I get what you mean mate.

If Villa wants to finish his career in his more natural position and be Adulated like never before then Liverpool would be the best career move he could ever make, but if he wants to finish his with medals and silverware, he's already made the best career move he could ever make as at this moment in time he's at the best club to do it.

Much as I think he's a fantastic footballer I don't see the value in splashing such a huge it would require to get an aging player who is looking past his best now. Yes his best was outstanding but I prefer the idea of buying people who are just before or in their prime rather than on the downward slope for silly money and I don't think FSG would sanction such a deal either.

Hazard-Coutinho-Lucas Moura much more the type of player I want to see us in for, but being linked with the likes of Villa is never going to disappoint me.

For me this is a no-go! NESV do not spen big on players of his age - especially when we have players in this position! If we need more strikers then I think we will either promote from the youth setup or buy cheap (Anelka?)...

I must say I am delighted to be linked with him again - class act... And at least this time we know the funds would be avaliable!

      Heard similar in the past.

No doubt Villa is a great player but I feel we should be looking for someone younger personally. Having said that if we sign him I'll be more than happy to see him score for a few years. But I seriously doubt this signing.

I knew there was an existing thread re Villa having posted in there previously but the rumoured striker quest and his apparent lowering in the pecking order at Barca seemed topical, or maybe I couldn't be arsed finding an existing David Villa thread so started a new one as it did seem relevant.
The cheap Anelka proposition does put the Villa question in a different context in that most would regard Anelka as past his best and not worth throwing money at, beside the obvious of course that he is long in the tooth and within a season or two would present us with a recurring problem.
The above could be an approximate comment regarding David Villa.

If we are to spend another 35-40 million, I would prefer it not to be Villa. He isn't getting younger and his price will just drop. We could buy someone younger for that price who will be even better than Villa IMO.

Chelsea & Liverpool hover as Barca 'list' David Villa

      http://www.espn.co.uk/football/sport/story/126189.html

David Villa has been tipped for a move to Chelsea or Liverpool after the lead story of Spanish publication Marca claimed Barcelona have put the striker up for sale on Wednesday.

Villa has fallen out of favour at Camp Nou, losing his place in the side for the recent Clasico against Real Madrid just weeks after reports of a fallout with Lionel Messi. Now it seems the European champions are ready to cut their losses on the man for whom they paid €40 million two years ago.

Marca leads with the headline "Barca open the door to Villa", before stating, "the Catalan club has put on the market the striker." The publication goes on to say Villa plans to move in the summer, but both Chelsea and Liverpool have more pressing concerns to boost their attacking options.

Chelsea are set to lose Didier Drogba to the African Cup of Nations and £50 million man Fernando Torres has looked a shadow of his former self in recent weeks. Indeed, a report in Wednesday's British papers claims Chelsea will try to offload the Spaniard for £20 million during the January window.

Liverpool have been linked with Villa for a while and are desperately in need of a partner for Luis Suarez. The £35 million acquisition of Andy Carroll, which ironically came as a result of the Torres deal, is simply not working out for the Anfield club.

Marca claims Villa's fate "seems to be one of the great English clubs, mainly Chelsea, Liverpool and Aston Villa. The Anfield club have shown much interest in his move, although its economic offer does not seem to [match] Chelsea."

Reds boss Kenny Dalglish refused to rule out the possibility of signing a striker on Tuesday, commenting: "Irrespective of what I say, it's not going to stop speculation we are going out in January to sign Joe Bloggs up front, or whoever. I don't need to say anything."

Loan with an option to buy in the summer.

I think Sanchez and Fabregas have come in an knocked him down in the pecking order.
He is 30. Would he be worth buying outright at that age?

Ya if i was a betting man i bet our offer is something like that one. It is less a gamble then if he scores a bag full and we get champions league it pays itself. If he doesn't and we dont we can decline the option to buy.  People should remember the euros are not to long away villa needs games he sees what is happening to torres at chelsea think we would have the upper hand here.  This could happen. It is a no lose situation

Just broken his left shin bone. Should put an end to this one.

      Hope his recovery goes well.

Just heard. An injury that could take him out til next season if it's that bad. At his age could do major damage to his pace. All the best!

Premier League clubs Chelsea and Liverpool have been forced to call off their pursuit of Barcelona man David Villa after the striker suffered a suspected broken leg.

The Champions League holders are currently in Japan participating in the Club World Cup where they will almost certainly face Santos in the weekend's final.

Villa suffered the injury in the first half of the semi-final clash against Al Sadd. It will likely rule him out for around six months, putting his Euro 2012 place in jeopardy.
