Beer Must Be Sold At World Cup Say FIFA
      Jan 19, 2012 04:39:46 pm
Beer 'must be sold' at Brazil World Cup, says Fifa

Beer must be sold at all venues hosting matches in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, football's world governing body, Fifa, has insisted.

Fifa General Secretary Jerome Valcke said the right to sell beer must be enshrined in a World Cup law the Brazilian Congress is considering.

Alcoholic drinks are currently banned at Brazilian stadiums and the country's health minister has urged Congress to maintain the ban in the new law.

Brewer Budweiser is a big Fifa sponsor.

Mr Valcke is visiting Brazil to press for progress on the much-delayed World Cup law.

Fifa has become frustrated, because voting on the legislation has been held up in Congress by the dispute over alcohol sales.

The Brazilian government has also failed to resolve differences with Fifa over cut-price tickets for students and senior citizens, and demands for sponsors of the World Cup to have their trademarks protected.

In remarks to journalists in Rio de Janeiro, Mr Valcke sounded frustrated with Brazilian officials:

"Alcoholic drinks are part of the Fifa World Cup, so we're going to have them. Excuse me if I sound a bit arrogant but that's something we won't negotiate," he said.

"The fact that we have the right to sell beer has to be a part of the law."

Alcohol was banned at Brazilian football matches in 2003 as part of attempts to tackle violence between rival football fans.

The measures have had limited impact, says the BBC's South American football correspondent Tim Vickery.

In order to drink, supporters tend to stay longer outside stadiums, areas that are harder to police than inside.

Much of the football violence in Brazil stems from club rivalries, our correspondent notes. Fans who follow the national side tend to be wealthier and include more women and families.

Health Minister Alexandre Padilha and other members of Congress have called for the ban to be maintained.

Mr Valcke said negotiations with Brazil over details of the World Cup had been slow.

"We lost a lot of time and we were not able to discuss with people in charge that are willing to make a decision," he said, adding that it was the first time a country was still in talks five years after winning the right to host the tournament.

During his visit to Brazil, Mr Valcke has been touring the stadiums in 12 cities where the 2014 World Cup will be played.

He criticised the pace of construction and said Brazil had not yet improved its infrastructure to the level needed to welcome visitors.

You would think that they would take these things into consideration during the bidding process rather than ride rough shot afterwards..

      You really could'nt, bloody pathetic.

I know football is an worldwide thing, but as far as, probably the biggest sporting event ever, these things should have been thought about way before, as paisleydaglish said. certain countries should be omitted from bidding from the start due to there laws, state of country... ect,It might sound harsh and unfair, but it should be done.

Was thinking exactly the same thing whilst reading the article.

No F***ing way they'll even be allowed a drop of beer in Qatar.

Agree with Paisley as well, they should've thought about all these things way before the bidding war started, arses.  ;D

      Typical of FIFA though.

If I was the Brazilian Government I'd stand firm on this as the World Cup was already awarded and the onus was on FIFA to ensure any rules they wanted were explained and in place before the bid was awarded.

I think qatar and the rest of the Gulf countries are looking at a ban of alcohol as we speak.

Qatar alcohol ban could be tip of the iceberg for GCC

Qatar’s move to ban the sale of alcohol on its flagship Pearl development may hint at the start of a Gulf-wide clampdown on booze sales as governments look to pacify local fears, analysts said.

The GCC states may move to rein in sales and tighten alcohol legislation in a bid to walk the line between the expatriate population and their Muslim citizens in the wake of the Arab Spring unrest, said Guy Wilkinson, managing partner at Dubai hospitality consultancy, Viability.

“Qatar is hardly the first Gulf state in which the local population has expressed its concerns over the sale of alcohol,” he told Arabian Business. “Following the Arab Spring, I expect Muslim parties to have more and more influence over the control of alcohol throughout the region.”

The sale of alcohol is strictly monitored in five of the Gulf states with Saudi Arabia operating an outright ban on the sale and consumption of liquor.

Reason number #3041 why giving a World Cup to Qatar is a joke.

      No homosexual's. No beer.

World Cup should be a celebration of football and cultures from all around the world coming together, lets hope Qatar realises this and shows some signs of progress before then.

The only way FIFA will bug Qatar, the same way they are having a go at Brazil, is if Budweiser is a sponsor of the world cup. Do you think FIFA would be that arsed if Budweiser wasn't a global partner of FIFA?

      Probably not.

But there is an 'official' sponsor for everything imaginable. Surely the lost revenue from beer not being sold is going to win out.

In the bidding process for Qatar I heard they were considering "drinking zones"? So basically, it's going to be hot as the devil's drawers- let's smush all the people together that want to drink. That should work juuuuuuuuust fine
