Last night I was thinking about why we can't break teams down. I know this may be obvious to some people, perhaps the majority, and truth be told it is to me. Once I'd thought about it at least.
I believe the reason we can't break down the lesser teams, is because we are trying too hard. Instead of battering them for 90 minutes, after which we say things like:
'We had 75% of possession'
'Our build up is great but...'
'We aren't getting bodies in the box'
'Our crosses are useless'
Ad infinitum.
Instead of battering teams like headless chickens, I think we need to show a lot more patience in our build up.
Instead of bombing forward, we need to pass the ball among us in order to tempt the cowardly fox out of its hole.
And that leaves gaps to exploit.
I've always said we are too naive in our makeup, that we play 100mph but with little to no direction.
So slow build up, make them come out of their holes, and then hit them where it hurts.
