Its taken me a LOOOOONG time to put together a solid, stable folder of programs to Rip/Burn DVD's. I have used dozens of various programs both freeware and paid services. But I managed to find the best ones.
For ripping get any version of DVDFab 5 or above. Its all in one ripper. Rips, Decrypts and Converts both DVD and Blu-Ray. Their are a lot of Blu-Ray decrypters but this one is very easy and SOLID. V.5 or higher offers conversion for everything Xbox, PS3, Ipod, Zune etc...It also has multiple Disc options....Full,Split,Clone,Merge etc... DVDFab has free versions and paid. Download the free version of V.5. The latest version I think is V.9 or 10. But V5 is a lot easier to find the "Free" upgrade online if you look for it.
The best Burner Program I ever used was Ashampoo. It is easy to use, no complications, it burns to multiple file formats and burns Blu-Ray and HD.
For Compression Issues....I actually use the Utility which came w/ my Laptop. Its called U-Lead DVD Factory and it has the "Fit To Disc" utility. It is the easiest, quickest compression utility. One click and go. It came w/ my Toshiba laptop but I think it can be downloaded. I Included links below for these programs.
