Players who bettered themselves post Liverpool?

Just had a quick glance at the Torres thread and got wondering how many players left Liverpool and went on to better things?

Short list!

McManaman won champions leagues and la ligas with Real.

Keegan won European player of the year awars at Hamburg with a European cup (but had won that with us already) Wouldnt say this is being better then what he got here

After that is it fair to say leaving here is the first step on a downward spiral?

I would say so. Most players that leave here a) either return and win things with us again or b) stay at the club they go to as a flop.
In order to do a, you nearly always have to be a flop.

Xabi Alonso could go on to eclipse what he won at Liverpool. Time will tell.

Mascherano.

McManaman is one of them.

Owen has won a Premier League title but hardly contributing to it.

Mascherano won 5 trophies last season but also hardly contributed to it.

Alonso so far has won a Copa Del Rey but that's not better at the moment as he won a European Cup and FA Cup with us. Could easily achieve more, though.

Dossena has been a part of an impressive Napoli side this season; was behind Insua here.

Mascherano was pretty important in the last stretch, when he played centreback.

If you're going by trophies then you have to stick Mascherano there.

And if Madrid win the league this season then Alonso too.

Although I don't think either are playing much better than they did when they were here.

Was coming in here to say just that one. I doubt there's a better example than that.

LARRY Lloyd ? Won a couple of European cups and the League with Forest.

Unfortunately for us both Alonso and Masch will probably be fairly happy with the moves they made a coupld of seasons back. Masch has won it all. Xabi has had to wait longer but I suspect he'll gt himself a La Liga title this season.

Masch started 34 games last year. Not bad for someone contributing F**k all.

Mascherano did play an important role towards the end of the season last season. I think he played CB or something ..

but, thinking about it, he will probably be always remembered as the midfield destroyer for Liverpool.

And actually started in all their Champions League games last season in the last 16 round, quarter finals, semi finals, and as you said the final. Safe to say  that he was part of the team that won that Champions League.

I'm pretty sure he's been used far more as a centre back than as a CDM at Barca hasn't he? It's pretty rare that Guardiola doesn't play Busquets.

Yeah, Masch doesn't really fit in as a DM at Barcelona, he lacks some creativity compared to Busquets. But fits right in at CB. His role is very similar to how he played for us though.

John Toshack would have to be regarded as a success with what he achieved at Swansea as player manager(albeit with the help of ex REDS) and his time as manager of Real Sociedad.With Swansea he took them from the old 4th division to the old 1st division in successive seasons and was a Spanish Cup winner with Real Sociedad.He was quite good at putting the ball in the net when he played for us as well.

Fernando Torres  He certainly bettered himself by moving to a BIG club!!!
You could argue David James became a better keeper after he left us.

Alou Diarra never got a game for us and has won honours in France and captained the national team.

Gary Ablett won a FA cup for Everton. Only player to do it at both Mersyside clubs.

A warning to our strikers...

Masch got a lot of respect from me (I'm sure he cares) after his post-match comments in the Champions League final. Wish he had been a bit more patient, but it's allowed Lucas to grow.

Alonso will win more trophies in his time at Real Madrid due to the non-competitive nature of that league outside of the top two. Real Madrid and Barcelona are also easily the two best teams in Europe.

Alonso won the Champions League and FA Cup with us and has only won the Spanish Cup so far in all his time there so I would say his time here was more of a success.

Mascha has had sucess at Barca where he had none here.

Owen won Euro trophies with us and only scored one goal in a few appearances when he won the Premiership with them.

If I'm answering the topic title, how can you better yourself leaving Liverpool the greatest club in the world? There may be 3 or 4 bigger clubs than us, but none are better!
