Comolli: No massive transfer deals this summer
      Mar 07, 2012 11:14:24 am
Quote from: Comolli warns Liverpool fans not to expect any 'massive' transfer deals in the summer

"It is early days. We will probably make some adjustments in the summer but nothing that we've done before," he said.

"We signed nine players since Kenny came back so there will be a few adjustments but nothing massive.

"We have done the hard work and now it is a question of making some adjustments in certain positions.

"Kenny has said it several times that we have a very competitive squad and all positions are covered by two or three players, quality players, and we have a lot of young players coming through as well."

      Daily Mirror

Steve Nicol, as he told ESPN last night, was shocked to hear Comolli's comments:

"There was something I read from Damien Comolli that worries me as a Liverpool fan; he said they really weren't looking to strengthen hugely, they were loking to tinker. How can you justify saying something like that?

"To finish 4th, the team is going to have to go on the most incredible run, that they haven't done all season, and he's saying they just need to tinker? I'm not liking what I'm hearing there".

      --------------------------------------------------------

The way we played against Arsenal, Man City, Man U and Tottenham, and the ways we failed to score tends to support Comilli's claims.

Our problem is hardly that of quality but better training activities and schedules. We need to start scoring goals.

Of course we are not going to say 'We're going to spend £100M this summer - everyone increase your prices!'.

I heard us say something similar towards the end of last season and we ended up spending about £60M so I would suggest everyone takes this 'story' with an enormous bowl of salt.

So he says he won't be signing 9 players.
      "Only a few"

I'd happily see us sign three quality signings,
      With a few outgoings.

      Striker, winger, midfielder.

That would do me in the summer.

I don't expect us to spend almost 100 million to bring 6 players.

yeah good point op. we already have quality we just need to start practising shooting! all these players together training during the pre season will obviously be good for everyone too.

what he said is fine. we have indeed already done the hard work and now we need to tinker with the squad, not overhaul it again. kenny isn't coming in to save us, he's already here and building a squad, let's give him the time to do so hey? :)

I actually find it quite encouraging that he talks of young players coming through. I'm not worried by this statement.

Seriously? You accept this story as the foretelling of football doom?

I'd worry more if he was a dickhead who came out and said "we have a massive 9 figure budget and we want a, b c and d but we still have to start negotiations" than worry about him saying what amounts to a throw-away run of the mill comment.

As has been said on probably too many occasions, the 'project' is a 3-5 year one and as such won't be rushed. Even though some require exactly that.

      Really? Same conversation again?

Same as JD and Racer said. As we discussed a couple of times last week.

I cant see how we can spend big judging by our position.
If we get in the top 4 we could go for some good midfielders, we dont really need an attacker, we have a world class one, and a very promising expensive youngster.

Im sick of us wasting money. :f_wah:

I have been saying for years we should just buy quality not quantity.i would much rather have a £30mil player come in than 3 or 4 for the same money it never works. the jury is out on Carrol and the price reflects how much we got for Torres rather than how much he was worth.Henderson may prove to be another Lucas and in 2 years time he could be a main stay of the team. Charlie Adam is a typical player bought for under £10mil that may have possibly been a bargain but for me he has struggled somewhat of late and lost his way a bit since Lucas was injured.
So next season Carrol,Henderson possibly Coates will play more of a role Downing too .Our defense is well covered for now with Flanagan and Kelly coming into the team more often Lucas will be fit again so if we replace Dirk on the right find another goal scorer who can score 20 league goals then two quality players is all we need so I think I tend to agree with Comoli

Would be disrespectful to the current crop of players if he said anything more than he has. If you're looking for a quote saying we're in the market for a striker because our guys can't hit a cow's arse with a banjo and some creativity in midfield because our build up is so slow that we're considering taking pies off the menu at melwood then you're having a laugh I'm afraid. Standard quote to appease as many people as possible without revealing anything really.

See, I don't think an awful lot of money needs to be spent. We now have a basis of a very good squad. We have players who will stay in the first XI every week and we have a few very good "squad players". I believe it only will require a bit of tinkering. Maybe another top-class striker, winger and possibly another ventral defender. I am talking one player in each of these positions. We need to consolidate the quality we already have and the only way of doing so is buying a few very good players.

Comoli says this Comoli says that

I dont believe anything they say. Why would he come out and give his honest view on the summer market? Actually how can he? He might have a player lined up who's price will rocket after the euros and throw a spanner in any deal

With Lucas coming back and some of the academy players that are starting to shine I'm thinking we only need one or two really good signings. If we only signed a Cavani type player I'd be pretty happy. I think more than anything we need a healthy team that's bonded, full of confidence and used to playing with each other.

Although if we somehow make the top 4 we may need to deepen the squad a bit to make sure we have fresh legs to challenge for the title?

We need a top class striker top class wide left attacking midfielder and a top class centre midfielder.  About 60million should do. If this doesn't happen qualifying for top four will be a struggle again next season.  All teams ahead of us will strengthen.

This is what would give me pause. If we stay the same we are falling behind because you know that ManUre, Man City and even the Chavs are going to be strengthening their squads spending loads of cash.
