This is gonna be sacrilege here, but: I'd rather see Jonjo start today instead of Gerrard. Nothing against Stevie of course, just feel Shelvey earned a start and Stevie might not be near match fitness just yet.

Henderson at his age has better fitness than Gerrard does currently IMO. Plus, no reason to overplay Stevie.

Johnson and Enrique have done little to impress. Johnson looks particularly lacklustre.

Sorry to moan, but what is the point in pre season games if players who do well dont get a start when the first "real" game arrives. Never mind Downing and Cole ahead of Shelvey but Stevie hasnt even as much training done. Kick in the hole to some young lads there. Confidence wont take much good from it.

Johnson is as well, Flannagan done well pre season didnt he? And Robinson

Is this a "real" game though? At this point I'd say those preseason games were to see what fringe players could do. This game is more a "preseason"game for the players more likely to start to get a feel for this system. Every bit of experience is valuable.

I think it's strange Johnson is starting this one after being off. He didn't even get any time vs Spurs so I doubt he has any kind of match fitness at the moment. Thought Flanagan had this one nailed on.
