Little things that stick out in yr mind too, can remember the Kop at 4-0 shouting we want 5 due to us sweeping all before previous but never getting past 4 goals.

That year was the best football I have ever seen from any team in any competition - it would have won the title in any year against any team in every league.

One goal sticks out for me - against Arsenal I think - the ball was running out of play but Steve McMahon chased it down and stopped it on the line then rushed back to just nick it past an oncoming player went round another then passed it to Beardo who played a lovely cross to the back past for Aldo to slide in !! It just typified the whole season - effort , determination , skill

Just looked at stats for 87/88 season.

We actually hit 9 teams in League and 1 in cup for 4 goals, including 4 league games on the bounce where we scored 4 goals.

      Incredible!!

I remember it well not sure I'll check but I'd go for against Arsenal.

Just scrolled down the seasons results and a bombshell hit me, my first ever derby, my first ever away game and the game we had to avoid defeat to beat the record for most games unbeaten.

We lost 1-0 at Goodison think is was live on telly and Wayne Clarke scored goal if I remember right.

The only good memory I have of the game I went with my dad, his mate and his grandson. We're getting a programme and my dads mate who had tickets can't find em. We go to a local copper tell him we think Fred's been pick pocketed. They accept the story get us in and to our seats. All the game my dad kept watching Everton fans walking up near our seats then walking back (we were in home end). He kept saying I bet it's him who's had our ticket!!

The story ended that night when Fred got in his house all 4 tickets were still sat where he's left them on table next to phone!!!! ;D

A totally true story, I wonder if you'd get in these days if you said that?

It's interesting to see someone who's grown up with the likes of Callaghan & Hunt still rate Stevie above them, it really is a measure of the man that he rates as highly as he does amongst different generations of fans.

I like many doubt I'll every see a greater player don the red shirt let alone one that lives and breathes Liverpool who comes through the system.
The reason I rate him so highly is that he has not always had the best players around him so his achievements are all the more remarkable when you can drag a team with Jimmy Traeore and Milan Baros to the CL you must be special.

Chris Lawler was actually my favourite player a full back who scored 1 goal every 10 games or so think they call them wing backs nowadays.
He could easily play in todays game everything was effortless and always found himsef in the box and a good Liverpool lad too.
This is why we sometimes laugh about comments about tikitaka, false number 9's ,wingbacks ,holding midfielders we were doing all of this 40 years ago in one form or another.

I do have to laugh myself about the 'new' Liverpool approach. This is no way being negative towards BR he's my full backing in what is currently a hard job.

But come on playing it out from the back, a high tempo with full backs pushed right up is nothing I've not seen before. One of best full backs I've seen in real life Stevie Nicol was a master at bombing on and contributing at either end of the pitch.

Lawlers a great shout what was his nickname? Silent Night or something like that because of way he used to ghost in round back of defences.

I was glad jamie Redknapp had ago on Sky about that its quite insulting to all those who have played for or managed this club for over 50 years.

Steven Gerrard all day. I doubt I will ever see a player like him come through again in my lifetime.

I remember being at my grandads watching the Sheff Wed game. His first goal was one of his best ever. Pace, drive, determination, skill, composure and class all in the same goal. Just the finest all round footballer in our great history.

Robbie Fowler was just god and I enjoyed watching Steve McManaman....those 2 together were special. Carragher and Phil Thompson...legends...the re have been so many. But Stevie is just head and shoulders above anyone else.

I remember another game where we were shouting we want 5  ...... after only a quarter of an hour !

21/9/ 1968  Alun Evans scored in his debut game.
      4-0 win v Leicester
All goals scored in front of the Kop in the first twelve minutes.
Big Ron Yeats, Tommy Smith pen and Cally scored the others.

      Gerrard by a F***ing mile.
Easy to call him a once in a generation player, but he's beyond that now.
In my time as a Liverpool fan he is without doubt the best I've every seen.

Agree with the earlier notion that I'll be amazed/delighted if we produce a better player.
I mean a proper, from the bottom up, youth player. Not the likes of Sterling and Suso.

I mean if the likes of Morgan, Lussey or Dunn could go on to feature in the first team
over the next decade it would be fantastic.

Back to, what I think is the thread, point.
      Gerrard for me.

.... and Jimmy Case for breaking Geoff Nulty's leg in the derby..........

Jimmy Case was one of my favourite players. At one time he was the only uncapped player in the team.
Nulty was at Preccy Grammar three years before me.
That'll teach him for playing for the Bitters.
