Is there any truth to the rumors saying we're selling Grujic to Lazio?

I don't understand, isn't this kid showing enough promise to at least keep him another year or two and let him try to steal a couple of starts from the current midfield roster? I also remember reading that he was to a certain extent in Klopp's plans for next season.

Another thing I don't understand is the fee being mentioned. Something around €6M if I remember correctly. Can't we bargain for more or maybe a swap deal for somebody on their team? I understand he's basically unproven, but in this market players we've never heard of and half of a decent season under their belts are being thrown around for 20s and 30s and we're selling him at 6?

Just keep the lad and try to develop him at this point. We're gonna be missing Ox for half the season anyway (late November or so).

Type of deal where Lazio turns him into a Zelinski or Milinkovic Savic and next you know he's being sold at bargain fee of €57M in a couple of seasons.

I've seen these stories as well. I wonder if Lucas has encouraged Lazio management to look into this.

It's always tough for young players to break in at big clubs. TAA is very much the exception to the rule over the past several years with us. I guess Marko did pretty well for Cardiff on loan, but that's a long way from helping us win a Premier League title and contending for honors in the Champions League. We are bringing in (at least) two first choice central midfielders so time on the par will be harder to come by.

But from his perspective, it's time to be playing regular first team football. No idea if Lazio interest is real. I'd like to see him get a chance with us but the numbers don't really work in his favor.

EDIT: Just now seeing the following: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/jun/14/football-transfer-rumours-liverpool-lazio-goalkeeper-thomas-strakosha - seems Grujic might be used as part of a swap deal for the Lazio goalkeeper, Thomas Strakosha. Anyone know if that keeper would be an upgrade for us?

Not really. Lovren-Virgil would be the starting pair and we got Matip, Gomez and Klavan. 5 CBs should be good and but for the odd 'scares', Lovren was quite good in the second half of last season. Jürgen has huge trust in that bunch.

Dont think we'll spend on a CB, cos our primary targets are a winger and #10!

Oh I'd agree the second half of the season saw a solid improvement in his overall performance, but I felt those scares you mention are always in him because of his decision making process. He'll almost always go for the aggressive or proactive approach instead of a conservative, covering one. That's not such a bad thing if him failing has, say, <10% chance of creating a clear cut chance on goal for an opponent, but his scares tend to gift goals to opponents when a more conservative approach would have resulted in only a tricky contested shot at worst. Personally, Moreno, Matip, Karius, and Mignolet all have it in them, and that's why none should be in our first choice lineups against big teams when it counts. All capable of good but you can guarantee they'll cost you a game or two a season, especially in pressure situations. And that's the difference between Liverpool and whoever wins the title each year.

When TAA and Robertson have made (predominantly smaller) mistakes, I feel like they're learning from them and adapting their approach. Gomez is also very prone to poor judgement but I think the jury is still out on him until he's more consistently fit and has more regular games.

Personally, I'd like to see us spend on upgrading the weak spots in our starting line up. You know, the team (not the squad) that will face the Man Citys and Real Madrids. I feel like the inclusion of Fabinho and Keita are great and just what we needed in those positions. A midfield three with them and one of Henderson, Lallana, or Ox would be great in our system, with Milner and Wijnaldum as the remaining rotation options.

I feel a winger would just be for rotation, so we shouldn't be spending more than 15 mil. I'd much rather see us get, say, a Gelson Martins for free if possible (or a reduced fee, if not) or even someone like a Moses Simon to be tutored into the Klopp way (just like Ox's game was taken to a new level in our system). Or even both. There is good value to be had for rotation wingers. We don't need a big name, just someone with pace, a bit of trickery, and a decent engine. Our system helps such players out.

But as far as starting lineups go, that leaves us still with (in my opinion only of course) with two glaring holes at GK and CB. I have little issue with Gomez, Lovren, or Matip filling in against weaker PL teams, but when PL and CL titles are often lost against big teams because of individual blunders, I can just see us looking back again at the end of next year at the same predictable mistakes costing us (the mistakes that players at the very top clubs just don't do).

So yeah, personally, I'd like us to sell Matip and bring in an Issa for 20 odd mil, or even splurge 30 odd to bring in an Ake or De Ligt to pair with Van Digt. Obviously the Dutch options could be particularly advantageous for familiarity reasons. And then yeah, look to sell Mignolet and bring in a commanding keeper. Doesn't have to be a crazy shot stopper like De Gea, Neuer, or Courtois, just someone physical who commands the box, communicates well, and you feel confident will claim most balls in the air with conviction. An alpha dog. Keepers like that organically reduce the number of brain snaps from their defenders in front of them too.

I agree though that we may still need to splurge on a #10 Fekir-style player to help us unlock the teams that park the bus. It wouldn't be as critical if we ended up utilising Fabinho (with his great tackling range and circulation of the football) as, say, Fernandinho with Man City, then we can push up our fullbacks more again with less risk, and even our other two mids the way De Bruyne and David Silva do. However, there is a good chance Henderson will remain in that position predominantly, meaning those other players can't be as aggressive because of a less reliable range in tackling and because he is circulation choice tends to be short passes to his CBs and FBs unless he has heaps of time on the ball.

Any thoughts on an alternative target to Fekir?

I agree that it'll be tough for him to get a run even in rotation. We have six true first team squad midfielders now, and there is a chance we'll still get a #10 style player too. We shouldn't sell him so soon though, and certainly not for just a mil or two more than we paid for him. Not in this inflated market. We should loan him out again this year (possibly even to Cardiff again now they're in the PL), and do what Chelsea usually do and get decent money for those who can't break into first team when their contract only has a year left.

As for this keeper we're linked with now, I've only seen a couple full games of his this year and he was fine. I felt more confident with his energy and presence than I do with Karius and Mignolet. But it's a very small sample size. And compilation videos for keepers are useless because even our keepers have collections of great saves. It's the presence, communication, and decision making we need more than Inspector Gadget anyway. If he's going for 30 mil, that may be a bit steep if we're not confident he's the answer. I mean, Pope might be better value in that case.

I would tempt them with a 50mil bid. He is more than what Maureen has made out of him. Can play anywhere across the front-3, something we are desperate for.

      So why not?

Cos it's Man Utd and they won't sell to us. See their reaction to the Heinze situation when Rafa tried to get him!!

Personally, I think there are better value forward options, especially since he doesn't fit the kind of player I'd like to see on our forward line. But I understand what people like about him. I was particularly disappointed though with his efforts for his national team when they got smashed by my very ordinary Aussie side. Also, Roma only just bought him and would expect an excessive fee for him considering the whole Sallah thing.

reminds me of crouch. Tall but surprisingly good with his feet to be that tall. Decent player but to be fair there are few decent strikers like him in PL aswell. Could turn into be a very good player but as it stands now. He is decent but nothing special.

You are certainly right and I agree with you, but I feel like he could still be loaned or if Klopp likes him (something I read many times), then we could certainly try to give him game time.

Ox is out until November-December, we've got League games, F.A Cup, Carabao Cup, Champions League and we could find ourselves down a midfielder or two anytime as we saw this year.

If you think of Henderson as the only CDM replacement for Fabinho then this leaves Grujic competing for one of the two CM spots with Keita, Gini, Milner and Lallana. IMHO its feasible for him to steal a couple of minutes here or there and hopefully prove his worth.

However, I agree that he is probably looking for regular starts week in week out at this point in his career in order to fully develop and if it's his will to get those minutes at a decent club such as Lazio then we can't do anything about other than try and get a good deal.

All in all, I'd like to see the lad stick around one way or the other and develop into a useful player at this club, but if the circumstances can't allow it then send my sincerest regards to the lad and get us the best deal we can get for him.

Why is that strange. Can't talk about others but I have access to eriedevisie, LA liga, serie a, Ligue 1, Bundesliga, champions league and premier league.
Now I won't say that I watch every game but if there is a big team playing then I mostly watch it or have it in the background. I like watching football.

The good players will stick out and you tend to remember their names.
I just don't see what's so funny about that tbh.

Hahaha c'mon, chill out. Pretty sure none of us are actually scouts for LFC (or any other football club), nor are we under any illusion that we're experts making critical assessments of players from the occasional games or highlights vids we've seen.

Personally, I don't see any issue with people sharing and discussing opinions they've formed. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, this is a forum, right? That is what most of us are here for, right? Or are we just here to w*nk over our cynicism and apathy when it suits us?

As for those dreaded highlight vids, yeah, I'm pretty sure just about everyone here is reasonable enough to understand their limitations. I know that if I was to watch a Karius vid I probably would also see some impressive saves here and there, but it's unlikely to show me all the times that he didn't go and grab a ball in the air with conviction, or when he parried the ball into dangerous positions with minimal pressure, or those absolute howlers. But you can learn bits and pieces for outfield players, especially forwards and midfielders. You can pick up on the difference between the flair players who can beat people but then run into trouble or make poor passes, and those who do it just to beat a man momentarily to create space (and/or draw another) and then choose the right option.

Anyway, whatevs, it's not for you, that's cool. If you want to start a thread specifically based on players who've been personally and thoroughly scouted by the poster then I'm sure it'll be a much more engaging topic than what is being criticised here.

I feel your pain. This is going to be an odd World  Cup year I think, and already is with the likes of Holland and Italy not qualifying. Seems like there might be more than the usual # of good players not participating this time.

You're absolutely correct about the reliability of the links over the next four weeks. Maybe if I watch the games more than I feel like doing at the moment, it will help me not obsess over our transfer business, then I can "wake up" and see exactly what we have done.

Checking out young players I dig that Liverpool may also be interested in is part of the charm of every WC for me. This year there are a few nations to follow to potentially observe some of their youngsters at this level.

One is definitely Morocco, with the likes of Hakim Ziyech and Amine Harit. Most Liverpool fans are understandably keen on the former, but I'd actually be more keen to see us snap up the latter. The guy leaves more defenders on the floor (or giving up fouls on him) than any player I recall seeing for a while. And he's still a kid. But unlike most kids, he tends to be really clever and purposeful with his trickery. He seems to have a really good attitude too. Only likely to get a run in certain formations or off the bench though. Their two young fullbacks, Hakimi and Mendyl, would be interesting to observe on this stage too. Shame that we might only see them in three games due to being in one of the tougher groups, but Portugal can be very ordinary at times, so we'll see.

Speaking of, however, Portugal have three players from Sporting Lisbon we should keep an eye out for - Bruno Fernandes (as you also said), Gelson Martins and William Carvalho. All potentially available for free if their terminated contracts are upheld. All great value, if so. Also, wouldn't mind seeing more of Ruben Dias (in the unlikeliness he gets a run), and always good to see more of Goncalo Guedes and Andre Silva (although not really sure they'd ever be good value fits for a Klopp Liverpool side, considering other alternatives).

Spain, Denmark, Croatia, Serbia, Germany, and Belgium all have some players we should keep an eye on. Mexico too, but only fringe players who we'd be unlikely to secure work permits until they're established in the national first team.

And then there is England...  :) or my Aussies  :lmao:

Not keen on Ziyech, I think he would struggle in a tougher league.

I was desperately hoping for this to happen and IT HAS!!

So, the world's best keeper makes a big mistake in the WC opening game. Mistakes do happen.. bad mouthing Karius brings nothing to anyone.

I would be perfectly fine if he were to start as our #1 and we spend the money elsewhere

Yup, don't want De Gea, he's sh*t. No decent Keeper ever makes mistakes like that on such a big stage!

Irony that you have a go at me for not caring or getting bothered about transfers 😀

Hey everyone, calm down. It's just my opinion formed over several years on this forum and witnessing several years of transfer window meltdowns.

It wasn't aimed at anyone so just relax.

It's when we are interested in Vitaliev Litvonchenko from Dagestan Zagreb and (some) people come on and say they've been watching him for years and he is a class act. It's when (some) people virtually sex wee in their pants when they watch a YouTube video 4 minutes long when that actually accounts for 0.001% of their playing career. It's when (some) people claim to have watched so many games in so many Leagues that it is physically impossible to fit that amount of games into your life, unless you don't sleep that is.

It's so difficult to understand banter in the form of text, maybe i should use this emoji a bit more  :f_tongueincheek:
