      Englands most underachieving club?
      Jan 25, 2013 09:54:15 pm
Villa's exit in the cup has got me thinking what club should be considered Englands most underachieving?

Hand on heart we could be calssed as that but to be fair we a trophy every couple of seasons.

Look at Villa, look at Newcastle, look at Everton, supposed to be big clubs but no trophy between them since when? 95?

Then look in the lower leagues, Leeds, Forest the Sheffiled clubs, Portsmouth Birmingham.

So many clubs who should be doing far better and competing a lot more.

Which of them is the biggest underachiever?

Without thinking much, I would have to say Newcastle... huge fanbase, big club status, no success to show for it. Last trophy they won was what... in the 50s? Makes me laugh when they are knocked out by Brighton and people say it's "only" the FA Cup... as if winning the FA Cup wasn't a huge thing for them, haha. They're awful losers, they are.

I'd say Villa as they have a bit of a history of success with a European Cup in there as well.

Newcastle have never really been a successful club in recent memory.

      Newcastle by a country mile.

The money they have spent recently, and nothing to show for it.

      That's it mate.

Newcastle fans are deluded beyond comprehension as to how big a club they actually are.

I grew up with Luton as a top flight club, always kind of a jolt when I remember they're a conference side now.

Yes at our peak in the 80s they were a regular top flight side and decent at that.

You could throw forest in there, twice european cup winners even done something the mancs couldn,t do win it twice on the bounce, around that time when we were kings they were the team that pushed us all the way for that little 4 to 5 year spell. Now that is a serious fall  from grace.

      Forest.

The only club to have won the Champions League more times than their own league.

      Newcastle.

Massive support, utter sh*te for years.

Exactly as Racer said, Forest and then Leeds after them.Clough had Forest win 2 European cups in a row after Bob Paisley done it for us , so they should be aspiring to doing better than where their at now.Leeds have been dire since David o leary left them . He had them playing CL and doing good . 2 clubs full of history and trophies .

How about Burnley and Preston, both clubs were considered top drawer in the distant past and look at them now.I don't know what Bob Lord would make of Burnley these days or what would Tom Finney make of Preston.

QPR for the money they spent.

Newcastle was the first club that popped in to my head.

Also us if truth be told.

Depends if you are discussing recent history, or all time.

In the Premier League era, we are amongst the underachievers, but many sides would love to count winning the UEFA Cup and Champion's League as only moderate success!

We are underachieving in terms of our history, but sides have spent as much in the last twenty years to achieve less or not much more.

I do think it's selling us short to mention us, though the last few years and a rapid decline have probably added overly to our current self-opinion.

All time, we are one of Europe's most successful teams, and would be nowhere near this thread!

For me, there are two ways of looking at this.

Those who are saying Forest, us or Villa are comparing our current situations against past achievements (still a little unfair considering we just win a cup and reached the final of another).

The second way of reading this question and the way I took it was to think of a club that has failed to achieve success in spite of their massive resources, ie. fanbase. With that in mind, I'd have to go with Newcastle.
They have huge support compared to most teams in the country, have had some top top players but never actually win anything.

Newcastle. Have had some amazing players the last 15-20 years or so and have won nothing. But in fairness they've been mismanaged from the top from Freddie Shepard to Mike Ashley and barring Sir Bobby Robson have never had a manager who can do long term good on the club. It's unbelievable the amount of times they keep getting it wrong because if they get it right I'm sure they'll be brilliant.

I agree with this method of addressing the question.

So, with that in mind, I'll say Forest for the first part and Newcastle for the second.
