      Spine of the Team
      May 27, 2013 12:30:07 pm
Now that Carra has retired Stevie not getting any younger & players like Reina, Suarez, Skrtel, Lucas, linked with summer moves, which players will become the 'New Spine' of the team for the next few years?.

All depends on how long Gerrard has left in the game. For the season coming, it's looking like the spine of the team will be:

      Reina - Agger - Gerrard - Suarez

That may change if Reina leaves and some may also add someone like Papadopoulos or Lucas to that line up. On paper, we have never had a problem with the spine of the team, it's more the players around them. The basis of a good team has a quality spine and 4-5 quality players elsewhere.

As it stands, I'd add Lucas and Coutinho to that.

                        Reina

                                 Agger

              Lucas         Gerrard

                     Coutinho

              Lucas         Gerrard

                     Coutinho

                      Suarez

Cant see 2 of those being there at the start off the season. But as the spine goes i have to agree!

I am guessing you are referring to Suarez and Reina?

As it stands, I'd add Lucas and Coutinho to that.

                        Reina

                                 Agger

              Lucas         Gerrard

                     Coutinho

                      Suarez

So 3-4 seasons from now probably only Coutinho remains with the additions of

                             Ward

                         Kelly/Wisdom

                             Coady

                            Teixeira

                           Coutinho

                        Sturridge/Yesil

      Oops!

I did think about it mate but couldn't decide if he would be part of the spine.  Same reason I didn't include Suso and Raheem  ;)

I'll edit it though 'cos he does deserve to be in there.

Agree with this! Although if Sturridge keeps his form and scoring rate going he will soon become part of that!

I know its intended as a light hearted comment but you have hit the nail on the head.Too many players let their heads go down last season when we needed them to get stuck in. If we had 11 with Luis's attitude we would not be talking about aiming for top four it would be top spot or nothing.

It was a bit light-hearted, but you are absolutely correct. If we had more players with the mentality of Luis and Stevie (I'll throw Pepe in as well even though he's not an outfield player), we'd be much better off.

Have a hunch Sturridge a Coutinho will come out of the gates on fire for us.  Regardless of whether we keep Suarez or not, the form of those two will be what determines if we can break into the top 4.  I think Sturridge could find himself up near the top of the goal scoring charts this season if he can remain fit!!

No doubt the 2 lads mentioned will do well for us but last season they were surrounded by a little bit more quality & experience, maybe that could be our undoing this season?.

      What quality and experience?
Reina can't really be counted in that sense because they are attacking players, and the same goes for Carra, who in any case has been replaced by someone who is at least as good.

      Surely you don't mean Downing?

He's not gone yet, and it's looking like he won't be.
Besides which, Sturridge played well enough and scored a fair few when suarez wasn't playing.

If you believe Luis won't be leaving you're very much in the minority, not just with Liverpool fans but most fans of other Clubs too.

Sturridge did play well without Luis in the team but can he carry us to January like Luis did last season?  Personally I don't see it, he picks up too many niggly injuries.

Here's the thing - I look at the facts and go from there.
Now the fact is that JWH has said he's going nowhere. If he's lying we'll find out in the next 3 weeks.
Another fact is that suarez has banned all press conference questions regarding his future. We'll find out what his future holds in the next 3 weeks as well.

I have absolutely zero interest in whether I am in the majority or the minority, if others want to follow either the minority or majority, that's their call, but jumping on bandwagons of either camp isn't something I am going to do.

Just explaining that for you as it's the 2nd time in as many days that you've said that to me, as if that's supposed to influence my thinking or something.

As for suarez and Sturridge, we'll see.
