Liverpool's Sakho returns to France as injury prognosis worsens
Posted by SPORT WITNESS on February 12, 2014 at 11:03 in Sport Witness Football

Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho has returned to France for treatment after his recovery from a hamstring injury hit problems. The big Frenchman had been expected back at the end of January after he suffered the injury in December, but the club have had to give him longer and he's now returned to his own country for treatment and rest.

L'Equipe reported on Wednesday that Sakho had gone to the prestigious Clairefontaine national football centre for treatment. Clairefontaine is France's national youth training centre but also has specialist medical facilitates, The centre is around 40 miles outside of Paris and has welcomed other national team players previously to help them recover.

The French newspaper believe Sakho will return to Liverpool training in around two weeks but don't think he'll be able to play until March, naming the match against Southampton as a likely comeback date.

The length of time Sakho is likely to be out points to a moderate level hamstring strain rather than a mild case, Brendan Rodgers will want the Liverpool physios to make sure he's fully recovered because any relapse of that injury could see him out for even longer than he has been this time.

      Thanks for posting Saint.
      Not good news there.

Any idea on the reliability of the sources? (I include L'Equipe, because it could be the french version of the daily mail for all I know ;D )

In the NFL (different sport I know), hamstring injuries are a bear and routinely guys try to come back too early and make them worse. Hopefully he gets fully recovered before he attempts a comeback.

No idea of the reliability , but Reddebs posted an update on our injured players in another thread which said:- Mamadou Sakho actually had a tear in his tendon and not the muscle of the hamstring as initially reported. For a whole host of reasons tendons take longer to heal, but he is working hard and progressing.

Which again doesn't sound great. I think we will be lucky to see him back before March at the earliest.

Hamstrings can be a nightmare if you don't allow them to heal properly. I remember when Owen kept having trouble with his, the physio worked with him all summer to get him right, even went on holiday with him. Then when preseason training started the physio said Owen still wasn't ready to train with the other players. Houllier said he needed Owen to train with the other players "to give them a boost". The physio and Houllier fell out and the physio was sacked. Owen broke down again and finished up having to have an operation to "shorten something" (I forget what :) )and was never quite the same again.

If there was a defining moment in his career, then it was a snapped hamstring when his then-manager Gerard Houllier ignored the advice of his physio and insisted Owen be brought back from injury quickly because he needed his goal threat so desperately.

The French coach fell out so badly with the physio, Mark Leather, he forced him out, but Houllier later admitted to the mistake, which Owen believes led to the moment that changed his career - on a cold March evening at Elland Road, Leeds, in 1999.

“My hamstring snapped in two and it was at that point that my ability to perform unimpeded was finished,” he says now ruefully.

More urgent we get Agger back, as he's a better player.

And I hear he's close to getting on the bench at Fulham, which is great news and means we can drop Toure and play our first-choice CB pairing of Agger and Skrtel.

Real shame with the tendon tear as we could have done with him back sooner rather than later. Easily our best CB especially so with the way BR likes the ball played out from the back, we have missed his accurate passing and I dare say if he was fit we would have beaten the Baggies. There again anybody bar Toure we would have won that game!

Damn, just as he was starting to establish himself as well. Oh well. Get him fully fit before we risk him.

Really think this guy is going to be absolutely class, and I hope this isn't the start of recurring hammy problems.

Injured or not, he could hobble around and still look better than Squirtel.

Rodgers said 3 days ago 'Sakho is still probably a week or so away, but he's back on the field now with the rehabilitation team and working well.'

Hopefully back in the squad for the game against Southampton.

Well as Racer already said in the Lucas thread, Sakho is back with the reserves today and will train with the first team on Tuesday, so probably back in selection for the manc game. Bring it on.

Yep step Sakho.  He should definitely be given the opportunity against Sunderland.  For 2 reasons he should do better also a bit too risky playing Agger 3 games in a week.  Give Sakho a go and see how well he performs in his comeback game.

Am I imagining things or did I just see that Sakho got a warning over a post about the Anelka thing.

(Edit) Never mind I've just read up on it.
