The whole method of leaving on a free is to keep quiet and have the fans and the club in suspense, and walk out at the end with more options or and a bigger wage packet, or at least that is the theory. No point a player in his prime telling the fans that he is going to leave for nothing. What possible sh*t strorm could a player do in such a position? I just think it is a totally different situation to handing
a transfer requests and crying for a move.
As a fan yes it doesn't hurt nowhere near as much and can be argued as a dignified approach if parting ways, but from the club's perspective an asset has just vanished and will need to replaced.
