We might seem a long way off winning #19 at this moment in time, but with a general improvement in performances and the right transfer acquisitions, will we have a shout at it next season? We have some really talented players and were so close last season, so I don't think it should be beyond the realms of possibility. For me, the key will be organising the defence properly and buying a world-class forward. We currently lack these two crucial ingredients and it's killing us in games. However, were we to become solid defensively and have someone up front whom you can rely upon to put away that one good chance you might get in a game, we would stop dropping so many ridiculous points.
This season is all about getting into the top 4 and developing some sort of team identity in our performaces, which hopefully we can supplement with quality signings in January and over the summer.
With this year's CL money, increased TV revenue, increased sponsoring revenue and player sales, we'll have around £80 mil to spend I reckon (obviously depending on how much cash FSG are willing to invest as opposed to pocket). So, for argument's sake, let's say we sell Balo and Borini, bringing in £15-20 mil, and buy Martinez, Reus and Cech for a combined £70-80 mil (include Johnson and Allen in the list of players moved on if we can find cheap improvements). Our squad would then look like this going into 2015/16:
GK: Cech, Migs
RB: Johnson/new RB, Manquillo, Flanno
RCB: Skrtel, Ilori, Toure
LCB: Lovren, Sakho
LB: Moreno, Enrique
CM: Gerrard, Henderson, Can, Allen/new CM, Lucas
AM: Reus, Sterling, Coutinho, Lallana, Suso, Markovic
CF: Sturridge, Martinez, Lambo, Origi
A lot of ifs and buts in terms of the players coming in, but would that squad be good enough to win the league? It definitely has enough attacking quality, so it all depends on whether BR can get our defence sorted. We just need to get the best out of the players we have now and make sure we gel into a decent unit which will be able to challenge with the right acquisitions.
