      Run For The 96 5K
      Jan 14, 2015 07:49:34 pm
If anyone is interested there is a charity run to be held for the 96. The run will take place on Sunday, April 19, starting at 9.30am.

THE STORY BEHIND RUN FOR THE 96 5K
Run For The 96 5K is a new and accessible for all running event in memory of the 96 Liverpool football fans lost in the Hillsborough tragedy.

The event has been created by Dom Williams, the man behind the Hillsborough-Anfield Run, an annual challenge which involves small team of runners from across the country come together to complete 96 miles over three days between Sheffield and Liverpool.

The Hillsborough-Anfield Run was first staged in 2011, and for the past three years Dom and the team have raised funds for the Hillsborough Family Support Group; Hillsborough Justice Campaign; Alder Hey Children’s Hospital; and The Children’s Hospital Sheffield.

Dom now feels it an appropriate time to create a community legacy run in Liverpool, to complement the team’s annual challenge. He approached BTR Liverpool in January 2014 to plan and deliver the event, and discussions started.

The proposed route will start and finish in Stanley Park, taking participants past the Hillsborough Memorial Eternal Flame on Anfield Road. Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium and Everton’s Goodison Park will provide a fitting backdrop as part of the route (final course to be confirmed), giving runners the opportunity to show their respect for the 96 as they run and remember on race day.

Run For The 96 5K will give people the opportunity to get involved with a community based initiative, encouraging first time or new runners to take up the challenge. The event is also likely to attract families and, of course, support from the city’s Red and Blue football communities. The run also has the support of the Hillsborough Family Support Group.

All finishers will receive a commemorative medal and T-shirt.

Participants are invited to support and fundraise for the event’s two official charities, which we are delighted to announce are the Liverpool FC Foundation and Everton in the Community. This is a key part of the event’s commitment to ensuring that local communities benefit from the legacy run.

BTR would like to thank Dom Williams for inviting us to host and deliver the event, and special thanks must go to all those are contributing to help make this event a reality.

Good luck to everyone who is taking part in what promises to be a very special DAY TO REMEMBER!

Entries are now open for a new running event in memory of the 96 Liverpool fans who lost their lives in the Hillsborough tragedy.

The Run for the 96 5k was created by Liverpool fan Dom Williams, the man behind the annual Hillsborough-Anfield Run, and has the backing of the Hillsborough Family Support Group.

Liverpool FC Foundation and Everton in the Community are the official charity partners for the run, and participants are invited to fundraise for the charitable arms of the city’s two football clubs.

The final route will be confirmed in the coming weeks, but it will start and finish in Stanley Park.

All finishers will receive a commemorative medal and T-shirt.

The new run was officially announced during a launch event at the Isla Gladstone Conservatory in Stanley Park last year, attended by guests including Hillsborough Family Support Group chair Margaret Aspinall, Steve Rotheram, MP for Liverpool Walton, and former Spice Girl and Liverpool FC fan Melanie Chisholm.

Margaret Aspinall said: “I hope this new ‘Run For The 96’ 5k event will be a long lasting tribute to the 96. It’s fabulous that it is a 5k run as it means more people will feel able to enter – whether they run, jog or walk.

“People will be taking part to show their support to remember the 96, and that is just wonderful. All those who enter are a credit to our 96 and I thank you all so much on their behalf, also on behalf of the families and survivors.”

Melanie Chisholm added: “I’ve always been very proud to support the guys who take on the Hillsborough-Anfield Run. It’s a wonderful event to remember the 96 we lost.

“And now I’m so excited that the Run For The 96 5K is finally happening. I really hope I can participate as it is going to be such a special event for such great causes.”

The 5k event is being organised by BTR Liverpool, who also stage the Liverpool Santa Dash and Liverpool Half Marathon, among others.
