My memory is not as good as yours then mate but I agree with you on persisting with Jimmy as a first choice LB or even RB.

I dont understand when a club as rich as ours cant buy a proper fullback, its not as though Jimmy is invaluable to the team.

I think you know my views on Clyne  :)

J├╝rgen might see him as invaluable as he is just about the only player on our entire squad that has won anything...he is on the pitch every week not because the club can't buy a proper fullback but because J├╝rgen want's him out there.

Well we have plenty of issues signing players so not sure about we can't sign players.

All managers have blind spots and playing a ageing midfielder as a fullback esp under his own system is as far as I am concerned a mistake.

As much as I like James, he is gonna struggle to get in the first eleven once we bring in new faces, I mean if we get a very good LB where does he fit in as we are strong in the places he can play.

      Agree.

Great player to have on the squad though.

Experienced and can cover a multitude of positions.

Considering how many potential games and injuries we seem to get, I'm sure he'll find himself playing on a regular basis.

He'll play 30 games at least next season I'd bet.

I think what I meant is if almost everyone is fit and it's a Prem game or CL he could well struggle to get in the first eleven.

Absolutely; he's no winger but he's the best crosser in our team and I think we would benefit greatly by getting him involved more on the right.

Except from corners and free kicks right? 😉

I think the prevailing thought is if we do get a LB (which there are very few links too) that player is there to either a) be an understudy for a year and play the cups or b) be a journeyman there to cover so Milner does not have as many games.

Either way I think we will find him be the 1st choice LB starting the season.

I think people are reading into 45 mins in CM a bit too much.

He needed game time, so did Moreno and Robertson and we can't have 2 left backs starting. Milner can play in other positions so he played there for 45 mins. I don't expect to see him there again this season unless there is a crisis.

45 minutes in midfield during the final pre-season game and suddenly Milner is our new signing at CM? Just seems bonkers to me. It feels like Jürgen is kinda cherry coating our abject failure in the transfer window thus far. We failed to buy a midfielder for £70 million and now he's happy to have Milner back in the fold at CM and it feels like he is saying "we're fine, we didn't need anybody else, Milner is back".

Just going from the quotes from the manager mate

I don't Think he'd say it if he didn't mean it given how much Milner likes to play in the middle of the park.

It's ridiculous mate after achieving qualification for CL the club are throwing away a golden opportunity to build on this opportunity.
At this rate I will be happy of a Cup win and challenge for Top 4.

Fair, I'd not seen that. I'd still be shocked to see Milner at CM though, would have Grujic there before him.

Well if there was any concern about our lack of creativity and penetration in midfield after news of Lallana injury...

After a huge succeed teaching Moreno to become a great LB (as we see from Alberto's in this pre-season) now its turn of the like of Coutinho, Wijnaldum etc. to learn some tricks to become a good CM from Milly. Also rumored that the like of Mignolet, Karius, Matip, Sturridge, Mane etc. are informed earlier they are in the programs for the next couple of seasons.

Personally think Milner is sliding into Lucas's old role and is the 6th mid-fielder and perhaps even emergency CB.

      Emergency CB?  :D

At least he would officially be the smallest CB to have any played in the league.

Well you know what I am getting at...I think he is just moving into Lucas's reserve role a bit...I think Bobby is taking more penalties as James might not be on the pitch as much as last season.

We shall see; Lucas was pretty good in the air for his size but he was 5'10" and Milner is 5'9".

May be short...but probably has more of a brain for positioning and not panicking like Lovren.

I'm not saying he's going to be a CB btw...just think he is more of a Lucas replacement then a Lallana one.

He is certainly Lucas over Lallana given he hasn't a creative bone in his body.

He's a work horse and gives 100% every game but that's as far as it goes.

      Indeed.

I doubt Klopp will try this triangular peg in an oval hole.

I know he had a slight knock recently but he's been terrible throughout pre-season IMO, he hasn't done anything to warrant starting come Watford. I can't see him getting into the midfield and effectively influencing the game, I can't even see him at LB anymore and he's not even on penalties now so I really can't see how he fits into the team other than to provide a bit of cover on the bench.
