Should never retire a shirt unless a player tragically dies during a game. We have loads of legends at this club so if we retire a shirt for Stevie then we would have to retire shirts for fifty other players too.
If I was a joining Liverpool this summer and I was handed the no.8 shirt I would do my absolute best to live up to the past greats like Stevie who have worn that shirt. It would be an honour. That's why we should never retire shirts. It gives players the opportunity to become Liverpools next number 8, or whatever number, and establish themselves as a great too. Make themselves their own legend.
Its a good strategy for a manager too I think. For example if Kovacic is given the no.8 shirt but is having a bad game one week, the manager can bollock him and say your F***ing liverpools number 8. our past captains would be F***ing ashamed of you, do you know what it takes to wear that shirt and so on.
