As I've said before, I know I'd rather see more Scouse lads in the team and squad, and I'm equally sure they're out there.
Unfortunately in a game run by the international media corporations, there's no big news in us picking a local boy, however brilliant he is/will be. Hence we are constantly linked with exotically-named overseas players, many of whom (I have to confess) I know next to nothing about.
We saw on Wednesday what a strong-hearted local boy can do to a) lift the team and b) lift the crowd. Sure, Flanno isn't the greatest technically, but I'd pick him all day long over Moreno to play for my life. The same would have applied to most of the Scouse lads who've been regulars in the last 20 years.
This season more than any other has disproved the myth that hyped-up (CL experienced) overseas players are NEEDED to win the league and other major honours. The 'World Class' myth has, for me, been largely blown out of the water. PL football is once again a game about desire, determination, daring and teamwork, as well as talent (let's not pretend British players automatically don't have that) and long may it remain so.
Having said that, we need to find the lads who can match in potential the likes of Messi and Suarez, and treat them right so they get to that level playing for US. Scouting - that's the secret, and it should begin close to home.
A Scouse spine for the team? Sounds bang on, if they're good enough!
