Why is Allen only worth £10 million? If we pay over the odds for Southampton players then sure we should be charging at least £20 million for Allen. He is playing the best football of his career now.

       Last year of contract
Though Klopp likes him but he is not going to be a starter
Joe is really well liked by the club/squad pretty much everyone
Joe wants more games and in fact deserves to be a stater somewhere
Club does not want to screw over Joe and limit his potential suitors.

In this particular case we are not being hard-arses on a particuarly popular player with one year left on his contract...if he want's to see it out than fine with the club but they are trying to make it easy for him to have good choices (not just swansea) if he wants to leave.

Fair play to the club for trying to work around the issues without being assholes.

Another way to look at it is Gotze is in the last year of his contract and has a lot bigger "name" than Joe Allen but Bayren only want £20 million for him.

how comes we always seem desperate to overpay and do it so happily. And for the likes of Mane

Spurs just brought Wanyama from Southampton for less that a reported £10 and were hoping to pay £30 for someone of equal talent from the same club

This smells like a Brendan/committee signing

Wanyama only had one year left on his contract. Clyne cost us £12m for example...

It looks like I am the lone voice on this site who thinks that Mane is a better addition to the current squad than Gotze...
In my opinion Gotze, although a very good player, is too similar to players already in the squad.
On the other hand, Mane is very quick, has great acceleration & dribbling abilities which should complement well existing star players such as Coutinho, Sturridge, Firmino etc.
Asking price is a little steep but if viewed from the standpoint of Benteke OUT and Mane IN, then it is not too bad...

that's an example of us again paying more

were a mid table team for christ sake.

were acting like sugar daddies for Southampton,

£30 mill after an average season is laughable

24 years old, never played champions league, 11 goals last season and 10 the season before is criminal

its like we have a bidding war with ourself

It was only 1m more than Wanyama has cost Spurs and IMO Clyne offers more at right back then Wanyama does at CM.

How much do you reckon Coutinho is worth because he has never matched that output.

For what its worth, I think Mane would be a perfect addition to the team. Pace, strength and ability on the wings is needed in abundance. More so than a player like Götze, who is really good, but we have these types of player already. Plus, he didn't want to come here.

30m for Mane is too much IMO, but we are all aware that the money in the PL has just reached ridiculous new levels of absurdity. As much as we don't like it, we just have to accept this is the way it is for the most part. Yes, bargains can be found now and again. Players like Luis and Phil are exceptions though and not the norm.

Just accept that if Jürgen wants Mane to play for us and he's willing to pay up big money, then we have to accept it and hope that it works out.

Coutinho is a top player, player of the year, full international etc

He is in a different class bracket to Mane

saying that i wouldn't be surprised if he was sold for £35 mill

Mane is no better than any attacker we already have

Well, he scores more goals than Lallana does currently...

The same Lallana we brought from them for £25 million after he scored 9 league goals in the season for Southampton?

our scouting seems to be 'who's Southampton got that we scored more than the one we last brought from them?'

we must have some gift cards that only they will take or something.

Lallana is a £15 million player with a £10 million premium for being an England international.

Mane is a £20 million player with a £10 million premium because we're Liverpool and no one else will pay it.

i like it when people make stuff up to suit

Mane will not command a first team spot with any degree of certainty

wont be too long before people will be itching to get £15mill back for him

I look at the transfer like this...

      Sell Benteke
      Buy Mane

Mane > Benteke = Squad improved

Of course but there are degrees of improvement and is Mane (never mind the others we're linked with) improvement enough to push this team over the finishing line in the title race? I think not and that's what those of us who are upset by this transfer have an issue with. Next year is a perfect time to win the league and unfortunately there is a disconnect between Klopp and the fans - and he's not even a year into the job. He clearly sees LFC as a project that will time to complete and perhaps we may go on to be successful in three or four years time. Supporters don't want to wait three or four years, we're sick of waiting three or four years only to change the manager and start all over again. We're impatient and not unreasonably so. We want to win the league next year and another mid-table finish because of another lukewarm Summer will be hard for most to take.

I'm not keen about the price tag but for some reason, the more I think about it, the more this transfer grows on me. Don't get me wrong though, I will never be happy with the fee unless he lives up to it.
