Gini might be the first casualty of turning the team over towards younger players. When we signed Thiago my impression was that it meant Gini was not going to resign as they are close in age.
This team needs a lot of retooling over the next few years as we have key players such as Thiago, Gini, Van Dijk, Matip, Bobby, Hendo all of who are already either 30 or on the cusp of turning 30 and we need to start turning spots over with younger players. If we want to be competitive long-term we need to slowly turn these players over and refresh the squad, and not wake up one day and be a team full of mid-30s players well past their prime.
As good as Gini is, giving him a 3-4year deal is not good business because of his age and the amount of "older" players we have. Retooling this team is not something that is going to happen overnight, where we wake up one day in the summer and all those 6 players are gone and 6 news ones come in. It's going to be gradual and i think Gini is the first one. If he would sign a 1-2 year deal it would work much better but at his game it is likely he wants a longer term deal, which you cannot blame him for.
