He's not blaming journalists, he's blaming the club for feeding their usual sources that the player had chosen LFC before they had even agreed a fee with Saints. Reddy, Joyce etc all reported it at the same time on twitter. When that happens the info is clearly coming from the club

Liverpool have apologised to Southampton over "any misunderstanding" and ended their interest in defender Virgil van Dijk.

Saints had said they would report Liverpool to the Premier League over an alleged illegal approach for him.

The 25-year-old centre-back is wanted by a number of clubs and had stated his preference for a move to Anfield.

Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp had made signing the Netherlands international a top priority.

Statement in full:

"Liverpool Football Club would like to put on record our regret over recent media speculation regarding Southampton Football Club and player transfers between the two clubs.

"We apologise to the owner, board of directors and fans of Southampton for any misunderstanding regarding Virgil van Dijk.

"We respect Southampton's position and can confirm we have ended any interest in the player."

Major blow for Liverpool

The £50m-rated defender signed a new six-year contract last year, having joined Southampton from Celtic for £13m in September 2015.

Premier League champions Chelsea and Manchester City have been heavily linked with the player, but City's interest had cooled as they were not prepared to pay as high a fee as Liverpool.

Van Dijk missed the final five months of the season after sustaining an ankle injury following a challenge by Leicester City's Jamie Vardy in Southampton's 3-0 win at St Mary's on 22 January.

It forced him to miss Southampton's EFL Cup final loss to Manchester United at Wembley.

There is a good thing: VVD was not worth that kind of money and maybe some new window opens, e.g. Aubameyang is still available.

Call me mad, but just because we've ended our interest, can't we then restart it?

Is that just a little too hopeful and desperate as I try to understand how the f**k this happened. Not sure I can agree with Carra either, that sounds a bit too much like covering up and pointing fingers where they shouldn't be there.

I just think Southampton were after a auction and hoped that Citeh and Chelsie would push the price past 70 mil. They pulled out and now it's just us after him and we won't offer silly prices.
