We hire people who aren't up to the job - that is forgivable

We keep playing the same players who aren't good enough - then we extend their contracts and pay them more money

You can now close the thread !

I think you mean unforgivable don't you?

Can understand you wanting it closed after that faux pas ;)

      I meant forgivable!

As I am willing to forgive people for getting transfer wrong. It's part of the game.

And I think players should be given a couple of seasons with the expectation they will improve.

But right now I am watching players who have had 4/5 seasons and they haven't improved since day one. We have defenders who will never be good enough for a team who expect to win the league.

This video epitomises everything wrong with our defence.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02nVF-mGyDM

Watch Matip when the cross comes in. This isn't an isolated incident, it's a regular occurence with him in games. In case you missed what I'm talking about, watch as he turns his back when the ball is whipped in, allowing it to fly past him. Lovren comes in for a ton of sh*t over his performances, and rightly so to some extent but Matip gets away with murder as a result. Not only this but I've seen him duck under balls when he should be putting in defensive headers and clearing the ball. This is why I said in the Summer we needed two, not one Defender. Best case scenerio you move Matip to the third choice Defender position, worst case scenerio one of the two defenders don't work out but you still have somoene to step in for him or Lovren. Both defeners need to be replaced.

4 of the back 5 are Rodgers signings. Our key weakness under BR and yet 2 years on we have only managed to replace Sakho for Matip.

      Ridiculous.

Our problems don't stem from whom bought what, but rather legacy policy. It wouldn't have made the slightest difference to our fortunes if Klopp had brought players in under the same constraints, they'd be cheap and they'd lack talent. Similarly if Rodgers had spent Ā£70 odd million each on Center Backs he'd probably still be in the job. You get what you pay for. We paid peanuts so we got monkeys. It's as simple as that. The spine needs a lot of money on it over the next couple of windows.

We needed 2 top class centre backs and we went out and spunked Ā£70 million plus on 2 wingers.

You'll win F**k all without a solid base at the back.

The Reds have conceded 16 goals, their worst record at this stage of a league season since 1964 when they leaked 20 in their first nine matches.

      In the League.

At home - four games, one conceded, three clean sheets. (0.25 conceded goals per game)
Away - five games, fifteen conceded, no clean sheets. (3 goals conceded per game)

Are we just too open away from home? Are teams that much more negative when they visit Anfield? Has it just been good luck that we've only conceded once at Anfield?

Another home game, another home clean sheet.

So in terms of conceding it's now one in five at home, fifteen in five away.

One goal conceded in six Premier League games at Anfield this season following the Southampton game. And the Saints became the second team this season who failed to land a single shot on target against us at home.

So as bad as the defence has looked this year, there's certainly something to be said about our home record. Which defensively may be the best in the League based solely on home games in comparison to the worst based solely on away games.

      Yup weird isnā€™t it.

Watford, Citeh, Spurs and Leicester were like the ā€œStranger Thingsā€ upside down of the defence at home.......

The problem is panic. We panic when someone attacks us rather do our best to sniff their chance. Confidence is key!

With all our defensive injuries, is there a good player in the U23 which can be a good back-up? I rarely follow the U23 and do not know many players (except Ejaria, Woodburn, Wilson).

In JĆ¼rgen's first season, if we weren't on top early the match comms almost always started talking about putting Benteke on so we could start lumping high balls into the box, totally oblivious to it not being in any way the system and tactic Klopp was using.

I don't hear that anymore thankfully, but I think many are much slower to pick up on the type of center back Klopp prefers to use (and the way he likes to use them), which is also a significant departure from the English tactical stereotype.

While Saturday may have been a day when just about any warm body would have done (Sorry Gini), he's not going to buy someone he isn't confident will fit into his style and system.

Just to throw it out there, we've kept as many clean sheets as City this year. More than Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal. Only United have more clean sheets than us now, just by one that is.

Yep. I reckon you would find that the gap between ourselves and City was less considerable.

      6 months on.

Brilliant turn around.   Robbo   Trent   Virgil and Karius.

Still have  Gomez and Clyne as back ups.

      Lovren improved.

      All good stuff.

16 goals in 10 games at that stage.

19 in the next 24 games.

Probably more relevant, 8 in 12 PL games since VVDā€™s debut.

Assuming we matched that kind of rate with VVD in from the beginning we would have comfortably the best defence in the league.

Sure I read on Twitter today weā€™ve conceded fewest in league since Spurs at Wombley....,
