Joe is a specialist centre back. Im sure he will be in the ear of the new manager reminding him hes an international centre half. Be good to see that partnership of vvd/gomez back in my opinion.

Gomez has played half his career at full back

In what way had Gomez showed he deserves to be ahead of Konate/Quansah

I'd go for the goal contributions and the evidence of my own eyes.

Barney was a great servant, in a great team. Robbo better attacker and defender and the best LB I've seen in last 50 years for us.

So mostly subjective with strong stats base.

Barney is the left back that’s scored in a European Cup final , 2 League cup finals

Scored double the amount of goals as Robbo ,

      Has more assists

It’s very tough to use stats

Hence why “significantly” better would appear to be very hard to justify when it’s down to someone eye

It's a tricky one for Joe. He's been poor at centre half since that second knee injury but has filled in well at full back when needed. Having a right footer at LB does hurt us though so I really don't think Robertson came back into the team too early.

Summer opens up opportunity as the new manager might see things differently but it wouldn't surprise me if he looks to move on this summer.

I think he's a much better player and his stats are unprecedented in terms of goal contributions. More than double Barney's in roughly the same length of time.

I saw em both and I'll die on that hill. One is very good and one is much better.  Defending and attacking.

For me. The point here is / was that it's nonsense to suggest Robbo is a downgrade on Joey as some have.

Wrong again? Whatever, fella. 100% legit claim and I know many reds who hold it.

Significantly better player than Alan Kennedy - the stats alone tell that. Alec Lindsay before my time but happy to accept your personal preference.

You don't need to agree with mine....but it's a fair argument that can be had.

The point is that Robbo is an elite LB at world level. Joe is an elite utility defender and hugely important. But he shouldn't and isn't picked in front of the specialists.

Alan Kennedy would have finished the chance Robbo had in the derby!!

You know I think he might've.

He was a great servant and part of the first reds era - 77 to 86 - that I fell in love with.

Even if he'd  scored that one he' still be thick end of 40 goals / assists behind Robbo whilst playing in the dominant team in Europe.

I'm not dissing either Barney or Joey.

I just get bored people sleeping on the fact the guy we have now is truly special.....because he could score a few more.

Anyway. Joe's thread so I'll butt out and leave  those who know better to it.
