Need to find him a partner now. Matip seems to be a bargain basement version of Virgil rather than a partner. I would actually be interested to see how he goes with Klavan.

Said that myself mate, Klavan and VVD look the right mix.

I personally love how he dealt with today’s abuse from the Southampton fans and also how vocal he is when organizing our back line.
Great to see that finally from a commanding defender for us.

I actually miss big Rag from the starting lineup. He was absolutely superb throughout the Christmas period for us and probably deserved a bit more this last month or so.

The calm cushioned header back to Karius in which our keeper sets off the attack that gets our first goal is something I found hard to imagine Dejan Lovren doing even if VVD made it look so standard. I'm convinced that Lovren would have mistimed the jump and allowed the ball to float over his head to the Southampton player on the left, leaving him with the opportunity for a cross/shot in the box and possibly a Southampton goal. Instead it's calmly dealt with by Van Dijk and Karius sets us off for us to score in a matter of seconds.

Likewise, with Mignolet as keeper Firmino's goal at the other end doesn't happen because, well, Mignolet would still be holding on to that ball right now to be honest.

      VVD ?

Mr Smooth.   Effortless what he does.  Worth every penny of his transfer fee.

I can't remember how long it's been since I have felt comfortable facing a set piece. Virgil is the new Sami.

I’m just gonna leave this here......there were a few naysayers in summer and even January saying 1) “he’s never a £75m player”; 2) “not even the best in the Prem”; 3) “not gonna stroll it like in Scotland”.....

      So just to clarify......

      1) he is
      2) he is
      3) yes, he is

I actually think communication seems to be his biggest strength.

He walks around the pitch like he owns it, proper centre back.

Looks like someone you don't F**k about with an all,the type of player who would probably give you a slap if you didn't do your job properly & ive missed that kind of attitude a lot since Sammi left.

Defensively he's obviously very good, both aerially and on the deck, but what I like most is how comfortable he is on the ball. For a team that has to play out of the back line when opponents sit in their own half, it's such a strength to have.

It's not just the defence that's better with him in it, it's the whole team.

Know this was post three days before the Porto game, but don't you think that VVD is appearing to be drawing the best out of Lovren...? Finale have a voice in defense, someone that is taking charge

A odd one or two mistakes by Lovren, but the thing that i noticed the most was that he (Lovren that is) was not doing his usual thing and trying to dive in and win those 60/40 balls that were in favor of the opposition and either getting beat or giving away stupid fouls and I think that is down to VVD

In awe of this fella after watching him live from the 3rd row against Porto. Proper leader, something we badly needed. I don't care about the armband, I'm just glad we have such a personality in our team. Not a bad player either! ;D

I honestly didn't realize just how good VVD is until watching him get a run of games for us.  This guy is special!!  He has incredible athletic ability (pace, strength, balance, etc), the size and body type of an ideal CB, and the technical ability of an accomplished CM.  He's also got great awareness and knows how to organize those around him.

Get him a CB partner close to his level and we will be contenders!!

Fully agree with this. Based on what I’ve seen so far Lovee. Is a more natural partner for VVD than Matip. Having said that I would also be interested to see a VVD-Klavan link up as well. Someone earlier said that Matip is a poor mans VVD and that was pretty much on the mark. A lot of the best CB partnership were taller aerially dominant players partnered with shorter more nimble players. Hyppia-Henchoz (and then Carra), Terry-Carvhallo etc.

Lovern has shocked me. I just knew he would shrivele up and die once VVD came on. I thought there is no way this dude can deal with the competition. I am wrong, at least up to this point anyway. VVD has improved our back line in more ways than one. I hope Matip gets sit for a while and these two mesh.

Kudos to VVD for being the leader he was advertised to be and to Lovern for handling his business like a professional and playing well these past few weeks.

Probably already a candidate for player of the season as he has saved so many Reds laundry bills for cleaning pants!
