Deeney, who is pushing for an England call-up after a promising start to the season with the Hornets, also joked about Van Dijk's choice of aftershave. 

He added: 'One of those guys that sprays on his top as well, so it smells lovely! When he runs past you, it's like 'I can't catch you, but...''

Van Dijk Hailed

Former Manchester United full-back Gary Neville reckons Virgil van Dijk has been the Premier League’s outstanding player this term.

The Dutchman has began the campaign in imperious form alongside Joe Gomez, following on from his impressive start to life at Anfield after his £75m move from Southampton in January.

When asked to name his star’s of the season so far, Neville replied: “Milner for Liverpool, who have been outstanding.

“Virgil van Dijk: outstanding. Luke Shaw at Manchester United. I’ve been really pleased with him. I’ve got full belief in him and his talent. He just needs that break in terms of staying clear of injuries.

“Eden Hazard is a wonderful player. He probably is [the best in the league].

“David Silva I love. De Bruyne is brilliant. [David] De Gea has been one of the top players over the last few years.

“These are the type of players who have impressed me most.




“But Van Dijk – worryingly – has impressed me more than anybody.

He’s just a fantastic central defender.”

So so true.  I mean a world record for a defender and looks like an absolute bargain.  We are getting every penny of his worth.  Playing with 2 broken ribs still the best defender around.

Yeah he’s certainly up there. I feel his only weakness is that sometimes he is a bit too lackadaisical and careless with his clearances and he often hits it into dangerous areas or misses it altogether. That is literally the only weakness I see in him though and some might find even that clutching at straws.

I think Juventus showed the other night how important an established central defensive partnership is. While not facing the greatest opposition, they still had to deal with some dangerous situations but managed them exceptionally well. I think we are building that with Virgil and Joe.

Makes no difference who you have in defence if the keeper constantly fucks up when actually called into action. Migs and Karius have proven that plenty times with their inability to keep out simple shots.
