Massively concerning narrative being constructed within Italy already (directly from Rome police as well) that seems to be pre empting violence and ready to blame it on Liverpool supporters. Italian police are claiming that out of the 5000 Liverpool supporters travelling to Rome, 1000 are 'known' and ready to cause trouble. Incredible.

Sounds like the media going into sensationalist overdrive.

Hopefully that meeting today will quash a few of these worries.

After what happened the other night, this game will be similar to Turin in 2005.

There needs to be strong rules on ticket sales.
The law needs to be extended to refuse anybody from buying tickets if they had any history of violent crime.
Finger print can do it, just scan the finger when buying a ticket.
Football clubs won't need to have a copy of the database, just send a copy of the finger print to a police database to return a binary result without any more information, clubs wouldn't even need to store the finger prints so no concerns regarding Data Protection act of 1998.

You must know that as roma has always been backed by Italian media, politics & police.

Right now, the Italian media are very busy to save the image of asroma and to avoid heavy punishments from UEFA. Their agenda is twofold:

Firstly, they are trying to shift the blame on Liverpool fans (they wrote that "Liverpool fans have provoked..."). To give you an idea, today the most important Rome newspaper, "Il Tempo", titled that "The barbarians are arriving", referring to the Liverpool fans.

Secondly, they are trying to depict asroma fans as the most good-hearted ever. Twisting the facts, some press agencies made people believe that the amount raised for Sean Cox was provided by asroma ultras.

      It is a shame.

I've got members of the family who were there in Rome in 84 and they were battered after the game, no police protection whatsoever, shovelled them down some walkway outside the ground with grass verges either side and they were bombed with bottles and bricks, they came home looking like they'd been caught up in a warzone. My uncle had to go straight to hospital and have 18 stitches in a head wound soon as he got off the plane.bas**rds !!
The first thing they said when they arrived home was the lack of police protection.
      2001 was the same.

I don't know nowadays but surely we can send our own stewards to help with escorts to and from the ground?
The FA won't help us out, let's face it.

The police are the same now as they ever were which is why the Roma Ultras, F***ing cowards they are, carry on wreaking murder and mayhem as they have done for decades,
The Italian authorities, Roma and the corrupt police will not confront the issue and football violence in Italy carries on unabated.

Stated previously the game should be played behind closed gates with Roma facing any financial penalties, a section of their supporters are out of control and EUFA, FIFA or whoever has the power to correct matters are incapable or unwilling to do so.

I agree with you stuey but a better solution would be only Liverpool supporters are allowed into the ground for the return leg. Eufa should issue the tickets to L.F.C. for distribution to genuine REDS supporters. There is no way should Roma supporters be allowed into the ground after their performance at Anfield.

From what I heard in an interview on TAW this morning expect 1,000+ police heavy handed presence and LFC supporters will be congregated at a park across from the stadium and escorted by the police in and out of the stadium; those that don't go in a part of the group may not be allowed entrance. The journo interviewed said it's going to look like a military state and that is the way they plan on handling the situation.

      Quote from ConzS
Absolutely shocking - I hope we pump this lot again next week.

And is that Conte on the right with a wig?

Conti doesn't have a wig. He just has a brass neck, living off the back of 1982 to this day.

I was listening to a radio conversation just before ko, about how great it was that their players went to the Memorial, and how respectful the clubs are of each other. Minutes later, the incident happened.

The only Italian fans we have a good relationship with, are Inter Milan fans, who still love us for Istanbul, and warmly welcomed our fans that went there 10 years ago. The rest of them however, are an obstacle course, who think the consequences of the shambolic organisation at Heysel, justify them lashing out at completely innocent Reds at any opportunity. Even if they're not English.

Making Roma play in an empty stadium has been tried before, and failed. Doing it now would not solve anything either. Their mob know that if they restrict their activities to outside the stadium, the local authorities don't want to know, and UEFA won't hurt them.

As for Sean himself, his fate remains as it was, and is likely to be for some time. If so, he will be probably sent on the half hour journey home by air ambulance soon, to continue his treatment there, and hopefully the sizeable and generous fundraising efforts by our fans to assist him and his family, will help ease the burden on them.

I wouldn't trust their police as far as i could throw them. Our reds are entering the lions den here and the police will only serve to protect themselves. Their media will look to blame our fans for any clashes that there is.

Personally it's a game i would stay away from but of course it's a huge game and 1000s of reds will go.

I just hope and pray that with all the media attention surrounding the game and the build up that their police are forced to grow a backbone and that every red that attends gets home safe.

My two penneth. The police in Roma may as well wear Roma shirts, they are just bullies who hide behind their uniforms. Was listening to some horrific stories on Talkshite the other day of fans from other English clubs who have gone over there and been battered for what seems like no reason.
UEFA and our own FA are being spineless about the whole thing, and you just know that the Italian press will put a slant on their reporting and it will be our fans that cause or start any trouble.
So for all the fellow Reds who are going, safe journey there and back, and let's do our talking on the pitch and dump these arseholes out of the cup.

It's well documented, on film, in the press and by visiting supporters who have been clubbed senseless by the thugs in uniform, the Ultras are left to do what they do.

Not easy to stay calm in this climate. Obviously started by the Roma thugs. The return leg will be combustible to say the least.

I just want Sean Cox to make a full recovery. That come above all other hopes. The match is secondary as I'm sure everybody would agree. Obviously I want us to win but thinking of the suffering Sean and his family are going thru has put the result subordinate to the recovery of Sean Cox.

Unless it's like 2001 again when our support turned up at the ground and the ultra's were too busy having it with the police.

Pallotta: It’s time for things to change in Italy now
BY AS ROMA, 10 hours ago
      Share

AS Roma president Jim Pallotta tonight insisted that things have to change in Italy and in Rome before our history and legacy are completely destroyed by the morons giving the club's fans a bad name around the world...

Journalist: What was your feeling after Liverpool v Roma?

“I don’t want to talk about the game at all at Liverpool.

“What I want to talk about is how these games are great but they’re not life and death.

“What’s going on right now with Sean Cox in Liverpool, that’s life and death and that affects his family.

“I don’t really give a sh*t about the score of the game.

“It’s disappointing to me that Rome and AS Roma get blamed for a few individuals who do stupid things.

“Now, I don’t know the whole story. All I’ve seen is what I saw on the video, like most others, and at least that part of the video with Sean is just the most disgusting stupidity and my prayers are for him and his family.

“It’s depressing though that all of the other fans at Roma get blamed for something that, going back to that saying that I had about a year and a half ago… a few people wrecking things for everyone else.

“I don’t blame our fans. We have unbelievably great fans across the board.

“The Curva Sud… the only reason we come back and win games like we did against Barcelona is because of the 99.9% of the fans in the Curva Sud who are great. Then, occasionally, you get a few, normally outside of the game, more than anything else… it’s just absolutely ridiculous.

“But it’s time now for things to change in Italy and in Rome, because it is just happening too much.

“I’ll go back to something that happened in 1993.

“I was in Florence in 1993 and I was in a museum that all of us know. At the end of the day, when the museum closed, I was going to have dinner in a restaurant right next to the museum and I ended up getting into a better restaurant about a mile away.

“The next morning I got up and I drove at six in the morning to Paris. Most of the night, all I’d heard was sirens. I got to Paris and I pulled up to the hotel and the doorman asked me where I was coming from.

“I said I was coming from Florence and the doorman turned to me and said, ‘Ooh, big bomb!’

“I couldn’t understand what he was saying and I went inside and checked in and was having a beer with a friend of mine and CNN was on and it turned out they’d blown up 20% of the museum.

“All I remember after that night was Italians got together and said, ‘Enough is enough of this sh*t!’

“I remember millions of Italians, or it looked like millions of Italians, all over the country started marching against the criminal elements and saying, ‘You are destroying our history’.

“We have a long history at Roma and what’s going on when you have a few stupid people is that they destroy our history and they attack our legacy and I’m tired of it.

“It’s not just an issue for Rome. It’s an issue for Italy and it’s an issue for the authorities and it’s an issue for all of to band together and to finally wake up so that we don’t have a reputation - that’s not deserved around the rest of the world - that our fans are not good fans because our fans are the best fans in the world – it’s just a couple of F***ing morons that take the rest of us down.”
