      £2.5m payoff though >:(

FFS why can't we just follow the lead of other countries & put managers on two year contracts? That way if we don't qualify we don't have to pay obscene amounts of money to get rid of them.

Hear out what Beckenbauer had said about the England team all these years, which is, the players never had the confidence and determination to start with, not to mention the winning mentality. If the players had those qualities, we would have won a few major tournaments by now. So, the next England manager, whoever he may be must first get the players to overcome these mental blocks if they are going to achieve anything.

      £2.5m? Gutted.

Not surprised he's gone at all. All you needed was a draw and you couldn't do that. England should be winning trophies with the players they have.

The odds of winning that sort of money on the lottery is about 14M to 1.

McClaren failing and getting that pay off as a result was an odds on certainty!

as an Irishman looking in on the English set up you wont get anywhere until you do te following

1)Your press stop building you up to be better then you are therefore taking pressuer off the players

      2) your press stop slating managers and players where its not needed ok if they play bad they play bad but your press go way over the top

      3) your manager selects the best 11 players at the time of a game in the position they play for there club. For example Micah Richards has been outstanding at centre half for city leave him there for England. Lescott plays well all season for Everton at left back leave him there dont play Wayne Bridge who has hardly played all season

      well thats my opinion anyway

I can understand offering a high profile manager a longer contract, but the likes Mc Claren should only be given one competition at a time, and also if you don't reach the qualifications then there must be an exit route to terminate the contract.  Candidates like Venables, Hoddle, Keegan, and Mc Claren will always take the Job not just because of national pride, but also because the money is going to bigger than they'll ever get.  And if we're going to pick Englishman for nationalism then they have to show something in return by signing contracts with basic clauses, like 2 year contracts!

Keegan was a respectable person and was a true Englishman, when he failed his hands were up quick didn't want to cream money out of the contract!

This is the best thing that could have happened for you. If England scraped a draw then you would have been left with McClaren in charge for what would have been a dismal performance in the summer. The FA should never appointed him in the first place and definately would not have sacked him if England qualified, so I feel this could be a blessing in disguise.(As long as they get it right this time).

Excellent point by King Kenny. When McClaren was being interviewed after the game I was thinking about how Keegan had the balls to admit he wasn't up to the job and resign from the post. McClaren was either too arrogant or too greedy to do this and this for me tells you a lot about the man.

On the subject of the umberella. Has anyone seen anything so ridiculous whle watching a football match. It seemed he was more worried about getting his quiff ruined than actually trying to win a football match! This one image also tells a lot about McClaren. He was too worried about his image and how the press perceived him than actually sticking to what he believed in and getting the team qualified for Euro 2008.
