I always think the Liverpool and United rivalry, although often shown as hatred, is often sprinkled with respect too. It's the equivalent of Intel vs AMD, Xbox vs PlayStation... both the big names so therefore rivals, obviously there is more to it than that historically, but when it comes to football now, that's how I see it.
Now a team like Leeds, although have their own history, are nothing compared and typically just scum.
There are three greats in British football. Liverpool, Manchester United and Celtic. For me all three carry a significant weight of history behind them, a history that paves a direct link to the soul of football. Our statuses are built from great cities, great people and defined by three iconic managers in Shankly, Busby and Stein. For that I'll always respect Manchester United. That doesn't mean to say I turn a blind eye to proportions of their support who think they can take it too far in their rivalry against us. No doubt propelled even more today because of social media. They are pure scum and not befitting of the club's historic stature.
