Question on our second goal. Trent makes a diagonal cross to Diaz who beats Benfica’s offside. He heads the ball to Mane who is behind the last defender.

Question - why wasn’t Mane ruled offside and what would make Mane offside? Appreciate anyone who can help explain.

Because Mane was behind/level with Diaz when he headed it across. If Mane was in front of Diaz it would have been offside.

I think this has always been the rule. Only forward passes can be offside.

Yep always been the case - at least in my living memory.

Player A (receiving the pass) can’t be offside if player B (making the pass) is ahead of them, regardless of opposition player.

Backward passes actually can be offside - direction of the pass is irrelevant. Receiving player could still be in an offside position.
