My tummy aches from the humble pie I ate last night. I'm sorry. I readily apologise for the scathing comments about Skrtel because last night he was a true warrior and I saw what his supporters see in him. I thought there was no way for redemption from his past form, and comments were made in the heat of the moment. Still makes me wrong.
I'm still wary about his ability to play the ball out from defence. Too many time he opts for the cop out pass, passing back to Mignolet or passing the hot potato to some other defender who is being out under pressure. He can cut this out because last night - with confidence flowing - he brought the ball out from back numerous times.
That's the responsibility and confidence I expect to see from every Liverpool player in every game - that fearlessness that epitomised the likes if Souness and co and I think everyone showed that. With better form like this (and form that is played out without Sturridge and Suarez), these players will hopefully realise they are very talented and that - despite bullshit assumptions - is not just reliant on the star strikers of last year. That cavalier attitude came from all players last season, not just those two, and if last nights performance was anything to go by, they should realise that - yes, DO laugh at those in the media who say it was just Suarez.
Last night WAS what we expect from Liverpool every match. You've got to have that mentality that was shown last night in every game, such is the high standard of this club. Last night showed me that there are leaders lurking in many of those minds that play for us, including Skrtel. That extra little bit if quality would have seen us comfortably win against one of the top 3 teams in Europe.
But my apology is still unreserved - I apologise to his supporters here and himself because it's obvious that, even if I don't believe he is the long term option, he 110% HAS a role to play at this club.
