      Summer Friendlies or tournaments
      May 06, 2008 03:59:01 pm
With the season nearly over has anybody heard of any pre-season friendly matches or tournaments

the only rumours I have heard so far is Rangers and the possibility of a North American tour, I was hoping for a European tournament, where the wife can be hoodwinked be enticed by a long weekend of sun ;)

      From the Daily Record

      http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football-news/scottish-football/spl-football/rangers-fc/2008/04/19/rangers-set-for-summer-friendly-with-benitez-s-liverpool-86908-20387789/

Rangers set for summer friendly with Benitez's Liverpool
Apr 19 2008 By David Mccarthy

      Exclusive

RANGERS could face Champions League hopefuls Liverpool in a sell-out glamour friendly at Ibrox in the summer.

The SPL leaders are in talks with the Premiership giants and are hoping a deal can be struck.

Rangers are also considering an offer from Spanish outfit Atletico Bilbao, who are looking to play pre-season friendlies in Britain.

The Ibrox club have yet to decide whether to take the fixture but it would be another stern summer test for Walter Smith and his players.

      ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Has anyone heard of any?

The only one I've heard of, was the one in Toronto.
I'd like to think this was on the back burner now - due to it being a money spinner for Hicks.

I'm thinking of going to some in Europe again, if anybodies interested in meeting up wherever we play.

I know were not in rotterdam this year. Remember seeing an ad for it on TV week or so ago. Cant remember who was mentioned, but we werent. Doubt we will be in the Asia cup either as it tends to be different teams each year.

Dont know why, but Ive got a feeling we might be in the Amsterdam Tournament. Dont quote me on that as Im nto 100% sure, just recall reading it or seeing it somewhere recently

That would be ace that! Or at least play one friendly at Anfield. I remember last year there was a bit of a grumble that we haven't had one here for a while.

More than a grumble.  Think the Valencia clash may have been the last decent pre-season game at Anfield to be honest.

I am fairly sure I heard that we were doing the Asia thing again - but I'm prepared to be corrected on that one.

2008 will see Feyenoord Rotterdam celebrate its 100 year anniversary with a celebratory Feyenoord Jubileum Toernooi on Friday 1st and Sunday 3rd August 2008. Feyenoord will play host to Celtic FC, Tottenham Hotspur FC and BV Borussia Dortmund, the three teams they beat in the European Cup and UEFA Cup Finals of 1970, 1974 and 2002.

Amsterdam would be good, it was 2003 last time we entered.

Rumours of a friendly versus Atletico... but now that Atletico in the Champions League, doubt it will happen.

Could we meet Atletico or Barcelona in the CL qualifiers?

More than a grumble.  Think the Valencia clash may have been the last decent pre-season game at Anfield to be honest.

Very true! I was there! 2-0 drubbing I remember! Hottest day of the summer too, and I was at the back of the Kop where all the heat had accumulated!

Highlight of the match! Anthony Le Tallec overhead kick near the end that had everyone convinced he was sh*t-hot! ::) Everyone ended up realising that he was just plain sh*t eventually! :D

        LIVERPOOL SET UP VILLARREAL FRIENDLY
      Daily Post 13 May 2008

Liverpool will travel to Spain to take on Villarreal as part of their preparations for next season.

The fixture has been arranged under the terms of the deal that saw Pepe Reina move from El Madrigal to Anfield in the summer of 2005.

Although final details have not yet been confirmed, the game is expected to take place in the final week of July with Wednesday, July 30 indicated as a possible date.

Rafael Benitez has already revealed Liverpool will once again visit Switzerland for a pre-season camp with friendlies expected to be arranged during their spell abroad.

However, it is not thought the Anfield outfit will embark on any major pre-season tours, such as their week-long trip to Hong Kong last year to take part in the Barclays Asia Trophy.

      ------------------------------------------

While we're in that area, w may as well tie the David Villa, Joaquin and Silva deals up.

Am I right in thinking Villarreal is fairly close to Valencia Don Rafa?

Finally, it's been confirmed that we'll play Villarreal in pre-season as part of the deal that brought you to Anfield. How exciting will it be for you to face your old club?

Yes, I am really, really happy. It is going to be fun. It's always good to go back home and I have a lot of friends there. The club has had a fantastic season and fully deserve to be in the Champions League next season. It's going to be a good game.

It has been reported that Chester City will be welcoming Premiership Giants Liverpool to the Deva Stadium for a money-spinning pre-season friendly.

Rafael Benitez's Red Army will visit the Deva Stadium on Saturday, July 12 (3pm) for a game that is sure to pull in plenty of fans through the turnstiles.

A delighted blues boss Simon Davies said: 'Liverpool don't have any other fixtures on that day so we`re hoping for a fair turnout from their first team.

'It's going to be a great day for the fans - and a great challenge for the players as well.

'We've spoken to a lot of big clubs about friendlies and credit to Liverpool for taking us up on the offer.'

I might try an get to the Chester one. I went to the Wrexham game last pre-season and its a good chance to get a first look at the new signings although they are often dire games to be fair.

Cant wait till the pre season games, enjoyed them alot last season. It was a shame to see riise couldnt take him pre season form into the premiership he was great pre season.

Cant wait to see how the new signings do up against top quality opposition in villareal and atletico, and most of all i cant wait to see Agger back in action.

Ive just received conformation that I have wangled two corporate places for the Gers game. I have been to Ibrox many times before on junkets, care of suppliers, the food is fantastic, can't f***in wait to silence once and for good, all  the sweaty socks I work with!
The sh*t I have to endure week in week out about how well Rangers and Celtic would do in the prem, and how they would easily be in the top four, stupid cu*ts!
I'm going to spend the intervening period taking bets with any mug colleague who fancies his chances, but unfortunately they are big on talk and most reluctant to put their hands in their pockets! (typical sweaty socks)

REDS TO START PRE-SEASON AT TRANMERE
      Paul Eaton 20 June 2008
Liverpool will kick-off their pre-season programme with a friendly against Merseyside neighbours Tranmere Rovers.
Rafael Benitez's men will make the short journey across the water to take on Ronnie Moore's League One outfit for their first warm-up match of the summer on July 12, 2008, kick-off 3pm.

It will be the first time Liverpool have faced Rovers since the sides met at Prenton Park in an FA Cup Quarter Final tie in 2001. The last friendly between the two teams took place in July 1993.

"This is a mouth-watering opportunity for our players to test themselves against some world class opposition who have played at the very top level," said the Rovers boss.

"It's a game I know both sets of supporters will look forward to and I'm sure there will be a bumper crowd. There are plenty of Tranmere fans who will want to see their team take on some of the best players in the world and Wirral based Liverpool fans who have the opportunity to see their team in action playing a local club.

"Hopefully it will be a game everybody will enjoy. We are grateful to Liverpool for agreeing to play us and look forward to welcoming them to Prenton Park. It should be a fantastic occasion and it is a great way to start our pre-season campaign.

"Rafa has done a fantastic job at Liverpool and has proved he's one of the top managers in the world. Not many managers have won the Champions League and it will be a pleasure to put my side up against his.

"It's earlier than usual for us to be playing a friendly at home but we wanted to fit in with Liverpool's schedule ahead of their trip to Switzerland."

Liverpool's confirmed pre-season programme so far is now as follows:

July 12: v Tranmere Rovers (Prenton Park)
July 16: v FC Lucerne (Grenchen)
July 19: v Wisla Krakow (Friborg)
July 22: v Hertha Berlin (Berlin)
      July 30: v Villarreal (Villarreal)
      August 2: v Rangers (Glasgow)

Aren't all pre-season games live on LFCTV?

Not sure Paul, I didn't have LFC TV at the beginning of last season.

Would be good to see the boys at Tranmere, although it will obviously only be a reserve side, all the boys who have played in the Euro's will want a holiday when it's finished.
Might be the odd one or two first teamers in, but not much more than that I wouldn't have thought.

I think it was JD that posted we might not end up playing this game now lil cisse, as it might be difficult to fit it in.

None at Anfield then. Is there any particular reason for that or am I being stupid and it's obvious why?

Do I detect a hint of sarcasm in that post, Court? ;) :D

      REDS COULD FACE LAZIO FRIENDLY
      Paul Hassall 27 June 2008
Liverpool could be set to welcome Italian giants Lazio to Anfield as they put the final touches to their pre-season preparations for the forthcoming campaign.
Rafael Benitez's side now look set to face Delio Rossi's side on Friday August 8 as a final warm-up match ahead of a Champions League qualifying round and the big kick-off at Sunderland on August 16.

It had previously been reported that the Reds would face Fernando Torres' old club Atletico Madrid, but the two sides could not reach agreement and the Biancocelesti now look the more likely visitors.

If the match does get the go-ahead it would be Liverpool's first home pre-season fixture for five years, when Rafael Benitez's Valencia came to Anfield and claimed an impressive 2-1 win.

This could be the first home friendly in years, many lfc supporters are hoping to be agreed.

It is a good thing because it gets the team truly ready for the new season, there is no point playing only unknown or very weak teams imo

Haha true it is a rather busy pre-season. Hopefully some of the youngsters will get some games in there and take some strain of the first teamers while staking a claim for a first team spot. Im glad they put the Lazio game in there too, the fans need at least one home game to warm them up for the new season.
