      Rafa Awarded Honorary Doctorate
      Jun 04, 2008 07:11:26 pm
      http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news/drilldown/N160117080604-0849.htm

Rafael Benitez is today being honoured in his homeland with an Honorary Doctorate from the Miguel Hernandez University (Elche) in the province of Alicante.
The Liverpool manager will be joined by his family for the ceremony on Wednesday afternoon.

The award is to recognise his stature as a coach and the way he uses scientific methodology in his training sessions.

Also expected to attend the event are celebrities from the world of sport and culture, as well as politians from the academic field.

Before he receives his award, Benitez will meet up with students currently studying sports sciences at the UMH.

Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv: "I'm really pleased and proud.

"The award is in recognition of a long career in football. It's not easy to spend so long in one career after you leave university and so I am delighted.

"Of course to have a long career you need the support of your family and the other people behind you on your staff. I've had that and been fortunate that everyone has been working really hard with me."

Well done Rafa !!  Pure Genious  ;) :D

Had very little time with Rafa himself - about 2 mins tops! But was great to be there and meet the great man.

We spent about 20 mins chatting to Montse, Rafa's wife, after the ceremony.

And the saying is very true...

Behind every great man... there is an even greater woman!

Montse was pure class... and so in love with Merseyside and it's people.

Knackered ...and off to bed now!!!!

      Congratulations Dr Rafa...well done Senor.

Now come on Don, Haven't heard a lot from you on the boards lately...tell us what was said in those 2 minutes that you spent with Rafa.

Did the words David Villa come up at all?  ;)

Rafa thanked us for our branch's support and plaque - we didn't have time to ask about transfers!

We were all (5 branch representatives) wearing matching ties (Red with white thick stripes) and also gave him one. I asked him to wear it on match days for his tv interviews... he said "it looks good - but the wife decides the ties!"

Oh and one of the lads from the Madrid Branch (from the Wirral) asked Rafa to please bring in Number 19 next season in order to stay ahead of Manure, his answer was honest, looking straight into the eye as he shook his hand - "I promise you, we will try our very best".

Great bloke. Monste also very friendly, genuine person. Top class.

You just can't see Rafa (or family) ever wanting to leave our proud club...and God knows he could walk straight into an elite job here (the ceremony has been repeated on every news show nationally - much loved and respected man!).

Tremendously lucky Don. I'm not surprised of your analysis of him, the way he presents himself is exactly as you describe him. What a man, so good to know we have men like that still in our game and to be at our club is sensational.

He loves the hat though! If you look at my avatar the photo was taken just a few seconds earlier, he's saying "Put it here, I love my hat, it keeps my head so warm!". Bet he'll be wearing it on the bench for those cold winter matches next season!  ;)
