Word of Caution: 2002/03 - after 12 games we were on 30 points.

      Finished 5th with 64 points.

After our 12th game that season from November 9th we went on the following run.

      Lost to Middlesbrough
      Drew with Sunderland
      Lost to Fulham
      Lost to the Mancs
      Lost to Charlton
      Lost to Fulham (again)
      Drew with Everton
      Drew with Blackburn
      Drew with Arsenal
      Lost to Newcastle
      Drew with Villa

      Horrific.

That's where we dropped all the points. 28 points dropped there.

But the difference? the Liverpool team in 2002/2003 didn't have this bunch of players :)
I guess Sami, Jamie and Stevie are the only ones left from the 'relegation run'

If i was right, i think we won 8 and drew 4 after 12 games that season.
That gives us 28 points. So at the moment, we are better off by 1 point.

Intresting to see at this stage last season we had 28 points scored 22 conceeded 6. Torres had scored 5. We also scored 22 after 13 games this season have conceeded 8 with Nando again on 5. Big difference is Kuyty doubling his tally from last season with his 6 goals.

On a downer is Voronin had 3 goals at this stage while Keane has only 2  :o

Season Comparison updated (first post in this thread).

As you can see our performance against the same clubs is back down to zero after the last two draws.

The improvements in our results against United, Chelsea, Wigan and Man City have been wiped out by getting worse results against Aston Villa, Tottenham, Fulham and West Ham.

First of all I have updated the first post in this thread.

But got some pretty shitty news.

Our season's doesn't seem to be that much better at all than last season looking at the direct comparison for game v game comparisons.

I've got us on equal points after playing the same fixtures from last year, and have scored less and conceded more.  Somebody want to check my figures?

^^ In other words, if we had the same fixtures last season in the order we had them this season we would be on the same number of points and probably still top.

We have got an extra 3 points against Man Utd, but lost them against Spurs.

We have got an extra 2 points off Man City, Wigan, Chelsea and Blackburn,
but lost them against Villa, Fulham, West Ham, Hull.

Sorry for taking the shine off our current position.

To be honest, We have scored less, and conceded more, which would bother me alot more if we weren't 3 points clear at the top.

The difference is we're top of the league right now.  We have dropped points against teams we had beaten last year but we have taken them off our main rivals.

I think it also has a lot to do with when we play these teams.  We had a poor 2nd quarter of the season last year losing to reading, Manure and all those draws.  This saw us lose any chance of the title but then we played very well in the run in.  We only lost to Manure and WHam (both away) in the second half of the season.

This season, we have played pretty average at times but managed to pick up points - even when missing our main striker, one of our first choice Centre Halves and, at times, our captain.  It's a bit of a shame that we have to have a bit of a break now because the games against Bolton and Newcastle saw us play some brilliant football at last.  I wish we were playing Manure this weekend and Real Madrid midweek as I think we would hammer them if we carry on the form we have found.

In the end comparing our results against last season is one measure of how we have improved but position in the table is the be-all and end-all.  And that only matters when the last game is finished.

The stats don't lie.  All it suggests is that had we played the games in the same order last season we would also be on 45 points.

The fact is that we need to improve our results against the rest if we are to have any chance of winning the league, because at the moment we are running on the same form as last time around.

Our January/early Feb fixtures are against

      Stoke (A)
      Everton (H)
      Wigan (A)
      Chelsea (H)

Last season these comparative results were

      Birmingham (A) 2-2
      Everton (H) 1-0
      Wigan (A) 1-0
      Chelsea (H) 1-1

So we need an improvement on 8 points out of the 12 - preferably with a win over Chelsea part of that deal.

Just shows what I've been saying for a while to be honest.

When we beat the other title contenders it gives us a bigger margin for error. Our pitiful form against the big three last season has been replaced by (so far) two wins and a draw. If we take Chelsea as an example, had we lost that match and won against Spurs, we'd only be second in the league because of our poorer goal difference.

The stats show that we haven't got more points than last season, but we've taken more off our rivals, which is just as important.

We need to start combining our victories against the big clubs with better results against those in the bottom half of the table, this is obvious, but beating the top clubs gives us a small amount of breathing room we didn't have last year.

That's right ayrton.  We said it at the end of the last season.  It's not necessarily how many games you win - but who you win against.  But don't anyone kid themselves that we have massively improved just yet and that there is a hell of a long way to go.

We have improved on our early form, but only since a couple of matches - so it's far too early to get carried away!

Lots of us (me included!) are so eager for us to win the title this year, but as you say, our results haven't been out of this world. What is very interesting from my point of view, however, is that we have achieved the same number of points as last season so far, without the greatest striker in the world at the moment, and with other injuries to our starting XI.

Rafa has been forced to cut and paste the side throughout the first half of the season, and whilst our results have been a little "wobbly" at times, IMO had we had the same injuries last season we would have slipped up far worse than we have done! The strength and depth of our squad has (rightly at times) been questioned, but whilst we have more or less the same squad as last year, these same players are bringing home the points - an improvement in itself!

I'm not stupid (I hope! ;)), but without counting any chickens, I feel optimistic with the imminent return of Torres and hopefully a more settled first team to begin the long push from now until the end of the season.

Well we have a lot of room for improvement in our last 18 games.

The following 18 games last season - we only got 31 points from a potential 54.

      8 wins, 7 draws and 3 defeats.

We definitely need to pick up the home form and become invincible, I'm not worried about our away from at all, it's been pretty well spot on all season, it's the silly draws we've had at home that have spoilt things for us.

Still nice to be top going into the New Year though.
