He just scored again as well :D. Great defending from the front. Saric has shown some good link up play. 5-1 FT.

      NGOG SHINES FOR FIVE-STAR REDS

Paul Hassall at The Halliwell Jones Stadium 29 April 2009

Liverpool Reserves are guaranteed not to finish bottom of the Barclays Premier Reserve League North after a convincing 5-1 win over Newcastle on Wednesday night.
Goals from Mikel San Jose, David Ngog, Damien Plessis and substitute Daniel Pacheco (2) ensured Gary Ablett's men ended a difficult season in style and capped a fine week in which the second-string also claimed the Liverpool Senior Cup.

The victory means Bolton Wanderers will now finish below the Reds who could yet end up as high as seventh, should results go their way.

Ahead of the match Ablett named the likes of Nabil El Zhar, Ngog and Philipp Degen in a strong side that looked well capable of getting the win they required.

The incentive was there for all to see and Liverpool made their intentions clear with a superb first-half display that quite simply blew the Magpies away.

The first shot of the match fell the way of the home side, although Nabil El Zhar's optimistic 30 yard volley flew way over the top of Ole Soderberg's goal.

It may not have been the best of efforts but it was a clear indication of how the remainder of the half would pan out.

With Ngog looking lively up top, the Reds began to stretch the Newcastle backline and on 11 minutes the young striker used the overlapping run of Degen to his advantage before cutting in and cracking a near post effort that was touched just wide by Soderberg.

It was a fine save, but one that served only to delay the inevitable as the home side went in front from the resulting corner. Gerardo Bruna sent a swirling ball to the far post where San Jose rose well to force a header home.

The Reserve champions have found goals hard to come by all season, but it was difficult to see why on this evidence and it wasn't long before they doubled their advantage on the quarter of an hour mark.

Once again the dangerous Ngog was at the heart of it. The Frenchman picked up long ball on the left, powered past his marker and fired a low shot into the far corner.

It was a stunning piece of play and a finish that again highlighted the potential of the 20-year-old.

At this point the hosts were well worth their two-goal cushion and it could so easily have been three on 20 minutes, but Bruna saw his searing free-kick crash back off the woodwork with Soderberg rooted to the spot.

The Argentine's luck may well have been out with a direct route to goal, but he did get his second assist of the match just eight minutes later when his sublime near post free-kick was touched in by Plessis.

Less than half an hour played and Liverpool were already out of sight.

The shell-shocked Geordies did improve as the half came to a close, but the Reds rearguard held firm to maintain their three goal lead at the interval.

With the three points in the bag the second 45 was a less rewarding spectacle. Newcastle improved and could have reduced the arrears through the dangerous Nile Ranger but San Jose and co did well to keep him at bay.

It seemed to be Liverpool's night and after the highly-rated Nikola Saric made his Reds bow with an impressive cameo, fellow substitute Pacheco made it four with a sublime free-kick from 25 yards.

It looked like being the end of the scoring until the Geordies finally grabbed a consolation when Haris Vuckic prodded home after a goalmouth scramble.

The response did little to dampen Liverpool's spirits and they made sure they had the last word two minutes from time when Pacheco raced clean through to coolly fire in the fifth.

Liverpool Reserves: Dean Bouzanis, Philipp Degen (Emmanuel Gomis Mendy 70), Stephen Darby, Mikel San Jose Dominguez, Daniel Ayala, Victor Palsson, Damien Plessis, Andras Simon, Gerardo Bruna, Nabil El Zhar (Daniel Pacheco 65), David Ngog (Nikola Saric 80). Unused subs: Martin Hansen, Vincent Weijl.

Newcastle United Reserves: Ole Soderberg, Philip Airey, Darren Lough, Ben Tozer, James Tavernier, Wesley Ngo Baheng, Ryan Donaldson, Nile Ranger, Xisco (Jonathan Godsmark 62), Frank Danquah, Haris Vuckic. Unused subs: Mark Doninger, Bradden Inman, Matthew Grieve, James Taylor.

Liverpoolfc.tv man of the match: David Ngog. A constant threat and took his goal with aplomb.

Great win tonight to finish off the season with a goal feast, I'd be more than happy with that scoreline for the first team on Sunday  ;D

Well played David N'Gog and two goals from Pacheco, great stuff lads, let's hope next season isn't so much of a struggle, and the goals come a bit more freely.

Shame the lads couldn't find this form when it mattered but well played tonight.

Pacheco made a good impact from the bench and his free kick was a gem. Ngog looked like a first team player in a reserve team. Bruna had nothing in his mind other than to attack and his delivery from set plays was lovely to watch. Just a few things that impressed me from a very good team performance.

Shame there isn't a few more games in the ressie's season. 20 league games from the beginning of September until the end of April just doesn't seem enough. 2 games in January, 1 game in February, 2 games in March and then 5 games in April? It doesn't surprise you that the last three league games the ressie's have played, they've looked a lot more improved. Especially tonight.

^^^ Yeah, its such a shame we don't more games, it's all a bit hit and miss really isn't it.

I thought we hadn't played as well this season because Gary Ablett had lost a few of his players that he'd had last year to the first team, I agree N'Gog looked the outstanding player tonight, you can tell he's had first team experience, it makes a huge difference, and it's a massive step up.

But like he's said a few times, that's what his job is, and it must be satisfying to see some of the young guns mixing it with the 'big boys'.

      RESERVES OFF TO AMSTERDAM

      Steve Hunter 07 May 2009

Liverpool Reserves this morning jetted off to Amsterdam ahead of their friendly with Dutch side Ajax in a friendly on Friday night.
Kick-off will be at 6.45pm BST and you can watch the entire match live on LFC TV. You can also watch the match live online with our fantastic e-Season Ticket service.

Our build-up show starts at 6.30pm when Matt Critchley will be joined by former Red David Johnson, while David Fairclough will be part of our commentary team.

Gary Ablett's side, who finished the 2008-2009 campaign in seventh place in the Barclays Premier Reserve League North, are taking on the Dutch side to raise funds for local charities.

Ajax recently won their reserve team league and the match promises to be a good test for Ablett's men.

Gonna be a hard game for the lads this, it will be interesting to see who plays as well, although I expect Ablett to chop and change a bit, will be watching this tomorrow night.

No, DLS, I would imagine the majority of them have gone though, good experience for them, like I said, I reckon Gary will rotate quite a bit.

Be interesting to see if Ngog goes, I doubt he will but he's had a few run outs with the ressies this season. Also be good to see if any of the youth side get to go and it could be good experience to prepare for the youth cup final.

Reckon a few of the youth will go. Can't see Ngog going with a few league games left for the first team though, can you?

      CRUEL BLOW DENIES RESERVES

      Steve Hunter 08 May 2009

A dramatic stoppage time own goal from Stephen Darby gave Ajax a 1-0 win over Liverpool Reserves in a prestigious friendly on Friday night.
It was cruel misfortune for the reserve team skipper as he spectacularly deflected a cross from substitute Danilo Sousa Campos beyond the reach of Dean Bouzanis and into the back of the net.

The friendly encounter in Amsterdam was staged to raise funds for the charity 'Right to Play' and on a lovely summer's evening Gary Ablett's side certainly gave a good account of themselves.

Darby actually had a great chance to win it for the Reds in the 83rd minute when a superb run presented him one-on-one with the Dutch international Martin Stekelenburg. Unfortunately, the defender could only shoot high over the bar.

Krisztian Nemeth had his moments during his 70 minute outing. He found himself clean through on goal in the sixth minute but a heavy touch gave Stekelenburg the chance to clear.

Then a superb through ball from the Hungarian sent Ryan Crowther racing through on goal but he fired a good chance over the top.

Nemeth had another great chance in the second half but he was denied at point blank range by the Ajax stopper.

Bouzanis then did well to keep out Evander Sno's header and just as the game looked to be heading for a draw the Dutch reserve champions clinched the victory in stoppage time.

Ajax team: Martin Stekelenburg, Daylon Claasen, Calvin MacIntosch, Daley Blind, Robert Schilder, Jan-Arie van der Heijden, Marvin Hasselbaink, Evander Sno, Edgar Manucharyan, Jeffrey Sarpong (Danilo Sousa Campos 45).

Liverpool team: Martin Hansen (Dean Bouzanis 45), Martin Kelly (Emmanuel Mendy 77), Stephen Darby, Mikel San Jose, Daniel Ayla, Damien Plessis, Ryan Crowther (Gerardo Bruna 45), Victor Palsson (Steven Irwin 45), Krisztian Nemeth (Nikola Saric 70), Daniel Pacheco (Vitor Flora 70), Vincent Weijl (David Amoo 77).

Shame we lost this game, Darby didn't deserve that, we had a few chances to score, but overall on the night we looked slightly the weaker side, all the lads got a good run out though.

Good experience as well for them.

Is that Marvin Hasselbaink any relation to Jimmy-Floyd?

Shame for the lads to lose, especially in the way we did, but the experience can only be good for them. And no shame in losing 1-0 to a side like Ajax who have possibly the finest youth system in world football.

Good experience to see them jetting off and experiencing a different footballing culture, as well as being exposed to different kind of teams and not just english ones, shows the method how they work about and was just glad they travelled there, and with Skeletenburg in goal, it wasn't gonna be easy for our reserves to score.

Still put up a good fight and proud of them!!

WTF? Stekelenburg? Sno? These lads are internationals, not reserve team players. Stekelenburg played against Australia in their friendly against Holland a little while back, too.

In saying that, massive wraps to the lads who came so close to beating a side with that quality but commiserations to Darby, heartbreaking.
