Summer 2024 LFC Transfer Board / Re: Scouting talk

We have a good squad with a good mix of youth, prime age range, and experienced heads in the group.  The task for the summer needs to be:

      1.  Extend the contracts of TAA, VVD, and Mo.  If any of them don't want to extend, then sell now to cash in and replace.

      2.  Replace Thiago and Matip in the squad.  Quansah already stepped up to fill the void left by Joel's injury last season, and it sounds like Sepp had a very positive season on loan.  Maybe he can return to round out the CB depth chart?  Same logic applies for Tyler Morton and Stef Bajcetic -- it shouldn't be hard to fill Thiago's place in the squad as he barely kicked a ball these last 2 seasons.

      3.  Add quality to the starting 11.  This could be 1 big time signing, or a couple of less expensive signings.  It may also need to be done as a 1-out and 1-in situation, like replacing Gakpo, or Diaz, or Jones, etc with a significantly improved option.  To be candid, I have been underwhelmed by most of the names we've been linked with like Dani Olmo, Ollie Watkins, etc.  Hopefully Edwards is working on a piece of magic in the bbackground!!  If we can get that 1 world class star to round out this group, I think we can really push for the title again next season.

Pretty much what I'm thinking. For all the fact we are thinking about who might come in, renewing the contracts of Virgil, Mo n Trent is probably the biggest priority this summer. If any of them don't sign, then sell and spend the money.

Your point 2 basically amounts to - just replace Thiago n Joel from within the existing squad. Which I agree with.

And then, yeah, ideally buy a top class forward, with 1 of Diaz, Darwin n Cody going ( although fu**ed if I can make my mind up which one).

Only extra I would add is a good DM, or an all round midfielder (Douglas Luiz type player) - mainly a DM but who can also play right AM if needed. Might not be necessary if Bajcetic is fully fit again but, from the outside, can't be sure about that and don't want to be over-reliant on Endo.

I'm quite happy with Scott as manager, although I'm not gonna try and predict how successful he's gonna be. He'll have my full support from the off, but it will be interesting which players he off loads, who he retains, and who he might bring in. I'll give my verdict t after the first three or four prem games.
Pre season may give some indication, but it's not always a true measure of what's ahead. Good or bad.

Can't wait to get started now. Nervous, exited, expectant, doubtful, worried, elated, all at the same time !
      Agreed

Yes, arguably we did bottle it especially against Blueshite, we were still in the race when we faced them, they wanted it more than we did, so I agree we bottled out, not so much against your shower of sh*te though, in the Cup game you got the rub of the green, we played the better football but that doesnā€™t always work out as you well know,
As for the Ā£50, Iā€™ll let you know once weā€™ve had a half dozen games or so, Ferrari wonā€™t know their new car will be in contention to win F1 until itā€™s spent time on the practice track will they ??ā€¦ā€¦.

You said yourself Numb Nuts, City are the best in the league, so itā€™s abundantly clear that to overcome them you need to beat them no ?
Arse failed to beat them, at home, so yes they bottled out, not only that, they lost to Villa at home, another major F**k up, donā€™t get me wrong, for me they have played best football, Lego head has done a brilliant job, but ultimately they failed, they couldnā€™t reach their zenith by beating the best cheats in the history of the Premier League, Bottling out at the pivotal moment, that may seem harsh, but it is what it is, when it came down to the crunch, they couldnā€™t handle itā€¦ā€¦they Bottled it !!

      🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼🍼

      🛎ļø End

      YNWA

We could go round in circles here but Iā€™ll end it by just saying if you lose/draw against the top 4 teams in the premier league itā€™s hardly a bottle job Billy.

Youā€™re wise to take a rain check on losing another Ā£50 to me, once bitten twice shy. 😂 However, if a bet is place/agreed on its before the league starts. 🖕🖕🖕

The club have tried to find a manager who is successful and who - tactically - plays a similar way to Klopp. However, he is not Klopp and I do agree with Keith when he says that anyone who comes in will be a step down. I'm pretty sure we all said the same thing when Klopp made his announcement earlier in the year too: however good Slot is / will be, he will not be at the same level simply because of how good Klopp was. Expecting more of the same, expecting things to carry on as they were is setting the guy up to fail. We need to be realistic and accept that there will be a period of transition next year and that we'll do well to maintain a top three finish.

When any new manager comes in, players will always judge him and make a decision about whether or not they want to play for him and buy into his way of doing things. What frightened me a little bit was the body language of established players like TAA, Virgil etc when Klopp came out ontot he pitch and was telling the crowd to believe in the new manager. You could see them looking at him as he was saying it and everything about their body language screamed doubt and anxiety and I did wonder as I was watching it if Klopp was actually saying that to the players more than to the crowd!

But those players have very big egos and Slot is going to have to win them over and persuade them that he is a credible successor to a guy they clearly would have walked through fire for. Virgil is clearly a leader in the dressing room or else he would not be our captain, and Slot being Dutch may help win him over. However it will be a big task to win all of them over and my worry is that even if he does get Virgil onside, there will be others there who will not want to take orders from someone they see as being beneath them. Respect is a really hard quality to define - it's one of those things you know when you see it - but he needs to get the players to respect him and that will be hard simply because he has never managed in a 'proper' league before.

I do agree with Keith's comparison to Fergie going at United - he massively overachieved with them in his final season and we know how well Klopp got the very best out of his players too (we practically had our entire youth team playing and beating Chelsea's first team in the League Cup final!) However, a key difference is that Fergie picked his successor - the Chosen One - whereas Klopp was very deliberate in having no part whatsoever in the process to find his. I'm not a huge fan of the moneyball approach to association football, but it does seem to work more often than not for FSG. Hopefully they've got this one right too and Slot will be able to get the players playing for him in a relatively short period of time!
