      Gary Neville....
      Jan 24, 2006 04:03:26 pm
Gary Neville has defended his actions in today's Times newspaper following his celebrations in front of the Liverpool fans at Old Trafford:

The Manc said: "I would have been apologetic if I had run up to one of their players and tried to belittle them but this was a celebration.

"You are caught up in the moment and for a few seconds you can go bananas."

Should the FA punish him.  I personally think they shouldn't. That way Jamie and Stevie can do it back to them when we knock them out the FA Cup.

I think the FA should charge him. And if I ever see him around I don't think I could resist decking the ugly get too.

      Carragher says sorry

Jamie Carragher says sorry for throwing a coin back into the crowd at Highbury on this day in 2002.

Carra said: "I regret what happened at Highbury because I let the club, the fans, my team-mates and myself down. No matter what the physical or verbal provocation, I shouldn't have reacted like that I would like to apologise for any offence caused.

"I was frustrated and did it without thinking in the heat of the moment. Anyone who has seen me play regularly will realise it was completely out of character but I'm not going to make excuses.

I was wrong and as a professional football player I should have known better. It's a mistake I won't make again."

Oops that was my post but I didn't finish it !!

Compare Carragher's response to Neville's. One is made by a man who knows he made a mistake and the other is a munchkin.

I'll let you guess which one is which !!!

Neville should be punished. Like all ASBO candidates he has contravened basic guidelines of good taste, conduct and the law of the land. He is, whether he likes it or not, a role model for the young, a professional and a representative of august bodies such as the PFA and a major Premiership club. A yellow card and an apology should be enough.

By the way, great site !!

Tommy, your 100% right with that one, although I do think fans are always going to have a biased view.

Yeah, Neville should be treated harshly, simply because he ran the length of the pitch to do it.

I don't think you can compare throwing a coin (or mobile or spitting, whatever you Scousers do) to celebrating a goal.

For Christs sake did it really affect you that much!?!

Spoken like a true Manc - like an idiot.
He didn't celebrate a goal; he was taunting and baiting, not celebrating a goal. If he was celebrating he would have stayed with his own fans and his own team-mates.

It is weasel words to try and grade wrong-doing in an attempt to excuse the inexcusable. Carragher and Neville were wrong to do what they did. Full stop. Carragher and Neville did something that was a danger to individuals or a group within the crowd itself. It was possibly criminal behaviour.

However, if I were a Manc using weasel words I could open up a debate about how Carragher gently lobbed the coin back into the crowd rather than threw it, how it was an instant reflex rather than a premeditated one, how he reacted on the spot rather than run 60 yards to perpetrate his childish and dangerous behaviour and not forgetting how it didn't matter what Jamie did because in the end no-one was hurt, it was just a bit of fun and it showed how passionate he was.

Prejudice and bias of this magnitude makes fools of those who spout it.
