This really is a difficult question, not surprised it's JD who started the thread.

It's a delicate matter, one that seems to divide Liverpool supporters. Clearly there's people who want to show their support of the club, and so say it's unquestionable that we could be overtaken. I wouldn't question someone who says we could be surpassed; United's record over the past 20 years speaks for itself, regardless of whether or not we think they deserve it. The trophies are still there to be counted, it remains a possibility.
Whether or not they catch us depends on ourselves - the players and the manager. The players are undeniably some of the best we've had over the last two decades, the current crop have won trophies on an International as well as domestic level. They know what it takes to succeed, and this season's disappointment will turn to motivation and drive over the summer, of that I'm sure.
The manager has a successful history, and has built the team he wants to the best of his ability. We are settling into a formation we know well, and whilst have no silverware to show for it this season, progress has been made.
We have the base to win trophies, as do United. The key now is stability and the right mentality. Rafa and many players have signed for several more years, whilst United seem slightly more unsettled on this front. However, I would have to say that for the time being, each team looks as likely to win as the other. I could see things remaining as close as they are for the foreseeable future, unless either club has significant financial difficulties, or is taken over by a richer, more determined party.
