http://sweetflag.wordpress.com/2008/01/08/freelance-journalism-course-early-prep/BackgroundI love to write.
Ever since I began writing & printing fanzines in the late ’80s & early ’90s I have looked for ways to get my thoughts & feelings out to masses, although in the case of the fanzines it was to the music gig & festival goers of that time.
The fanzines gave me an opportunity to interview bands, review music & live events. It also taught me a valuable lesson that writing & publishing a fanzine required a lot of work but that work was the best fun I had ever been involved in.
Back to the present & this blog has been my best way to communicate my thoughts on topics to the most people I can for the past 6 months & I intend to keep writing here for a long time to come but when it comes to the education of the written word I believe there’s more I can learn.
Studying is my next obvious step & I hope it’s a step forward, away from the dead-end jobs I have had in the past.
Talking of jobs, my current vocation is not a career. I want to improve that situation & studying freelance journalism is my way to do it.
In my working life I have never had a career instead it’s been a variation of jobs leading to nowhere fast.
I am now closing in on the big “40”. I’ve been working for 20 years now & if I am to make a career for myself from something I love doing it has to be done now.
The time has come to stop procrastinating!
LSJThe last couple of days I have been digging a bit deeper into the Freelance Journalism course I intend on starting this month.
I now have a copy of the syllabus for Freelance & Feature Writing which I will be taking at The London School of Journalism. The course takes roughly 12 months to complete upon which a diploma from the school is issued.
There are 12 lessons with 30 assignments to do which I have decided to take on-line rather than by post. Once I sign up for the course, which I’ll do the week beginning 14th January, I will receive the first two lessons; Starting Out & Readers and Markets. This means I can then finish the first lesson send it off to be marked etc & begin working on the second lesson while I await for the first to be returned.
The school is well know for it’s distance learning & my tutor will be from a freelance background in an area I have decided to be involved in. I intend to cover sports, gaming & TV/Film if I can, as I know being adaptable in freelance journalism will bring in more work & more opportunities.
I hope also that it benefits this blog in the future too with better defined articles.
Future PostsI intend to detail my course experiences here on Sweet Flag. This will help me maintain a record of how I approached the course but also it will keep me on the straight & narrow when it comes to keeping to the workload on the syllabus.
I hope it will be of some entertainment value to you the reader also & possibly be a help to others who maybe considering doing this course in the future.
Wish me Luck!
