In 5 years...

Has are squad improved in 5 years? Lets take a look at the squad from the 04/05 champions league winning squad and the squad today...

Dudek/Reina= Reina win- Although Dudek did win us the champions league I would have to say Pepe has that extra touch of class in him

Finnan/Johnson=Johnson win- Johnson is faster and mosre skillfull then Finnan

Warnock/Insua= Draw- Both are great young left backs but I'm not sure who would win.

Hyppia/Agger= Hyppia win- Hyppia was better composed in the air and was far more experienced

Traore/Skrtel= Skrtel win- Do I need to say why?

Luis Garcia/Benayoun= Draw- Can't decide who to choose

Kewell/Kuyt= Kuyt win- Kuyt is alot harder working and less injury prone

Alonso/Lucas= Alonso win- Far better quality then Lucas and worth alot more money

Hamann/Mascherano= Draw- Both of these are world-class players

Pongolle/N'Gog- Pongolle win- It was close but I think Pongolle edges this

Baros/Torres=Torres wins- Although Baros was good he is no-where near the standard of Torres

Subs

Caverliere/Kirkland= Kirkland wins- Kirkland is far better then Caverliere

Henchoz/Kyrgiakos= Henchoz wins= Henchoz is a better defender from what I have seen of both of them

Diao/Riera= Riera wins= Easy one really

Josemi/Degen= Degen wins= Degen was a better full back

Mellor/Voronin= Mellor by a long shot

I'd agree that our squad has improved in the last five years but to put Voronin as a striker .....that's pushing it

I think the bence was much stronger in 04/05. There was more good experienced players.

No doubt in my mind that the squad has better players in it.

Our first choice XI injury free and playing as we know they can I would feel confident of beating any side in the world.

You can never compare teams/players based on paper and stats.  Team chemistry goes a LONG way.  It doesn't matter how many world class players or Golden Boot winners you have on one team. Its how all the different styles and forms are mixed and put into action. I'm not convinced that you can "Buy" a Championship.

On paper, just like you stated, the 05' CL squad is not as good as the squad we have now, but they won Europe!  So no matter how good you look, it only matters on the pitch.

Jose Mourinho could have probably done the same had Abramovich not left a horses head on his bed side cabinet.

The squad has improved dramatically.. you only have to see how many players are linked away from the club to top teams in the transfer window. Also a lot of our international players play for big teams England,Italy,Spain,Holland,Brazil,Argentina.
