      Keyloggers
      Jan 16, 2011 06:15:09 pm
Has anyone ever used one before? I was wondering if I put one on a system can it remain undetected or can any Joe Blow hit a shortcut key to bring it up?

The point of a keylogger is to secretly record the keystrokes of a computer, before sending the data to a pre-determined user. Like a parent setting it up on their kids computer and then getting the email sent to their laptop or something. Now you can be a nefarious b***ard and infect someone else's computer by disguising the keylogger exe and then getting an automatic email sent to you with the keystroke data (including bank details etc, keyloggers can be very very dangerous), but no, I don't believe if you have yourself installed it that data is accessible to anyone other than you.

Haven't had any business with one except to remove for quite a while, and I don't know how they've come on technologically, so have a little read round the internet before starting anything.

More often than not undetectable unless you specifically run a anti-malware/anti-virus scan.  The process is usually cloaked from the task-manager/toolbar/system tray and so forth, trial or free versions usually aren't though.

edited to call you a perv  ;)

I've used one, you select how you want it to open and you can hide it very well if you want. The one I had also saved a screenshot every so many seconds if required. Didn't show up in task manager and I think you'd have to be a tech head and know how to delve deep into running processes to find it.

Can't remember the name of the one I used but I think it was Award Key Logger, if you can't find one get back y to me and i'll have a look in my old download ridden hard drives. ;)

Keylogging a computer without the owner's permission is illegal, just so you know.

It's actually for my own PC so I don't need to worry about that.

Why? Can you not remember what you've just typed?

No, it's what other people are doing while I'm out that I'm finding out.

Intersting. Sorry for prying, and do not feel obliged to answer.

But can you not password lock your PC?

On a legal issue, would you need to state the the PC in question will be monitored? Is it a Public/Family PC or is it totally private and you suspect someone of using it with out your knowledge.

Only being nosey, don't answer if you don't want too.

Well I could but I sometimes leave it on to virus scan, download etc while I'm out which would kind of defeat the purpose.

Don't think I'd have a legal issue it's my personal PC which I paid for out of my own pocket. I've gotten rather suspicious when I noticed under the recently watched list on media player was a porno which I don't have any of on my PC.

You could try CONTROL ALT DELETE and lock the PC that way, But I do not know how that would affect Download or Virus Scan.

      Time for a boffin.

No problem, just to add that if you're going to use the screenshot feature you're best to set the resolution of the grab low unless you've got plenty of disk space and also create a save folder for your screengrabs in the bowels of your pc under an obscure name i.e in your system32 folder and name it 'prefix' or something, it won't interfere with your system operation.

      Happy fishing!

No but the rest of the world might - youtube sensation incoming.  Another option is to use your screensaver password thing.  Don't think that stops downloads/virus scans in the background.

Did the Virus Scan, and completed with the PC Locked.

Let us know how things go.

Ctrl alt and delete to lock the computer will not interrupt any virus scan or download you might be trying to complete. In fact it doesn't stop any processes. For instance I'm sitting here listening to music off iTunes and I just locked my computer via that menu, and no interruption of the music.

I'm not sure who's trying to access this porn and I'm sure you don't want to tell us but do remember the internet has pretty much everything someone could want so I'd be checking my internet history to look for anything suspicious. Although if you're using Google Chrome it has an incognito mode (aka porn mode...) where the browser history isn't saved.
