Segura joins Liverpool as Academy technical manager
      May 16, 2009 03:06:54 pm
      SEGURA JOINS LIVERPOOL
      Paul Hassall 16 May 2009
Liverpool have appointed Jose Segura as Academy technical manager, with the 48-year-old taking up his new position on June 1st.
He will report to Academy director Frank McParland and will bring huge experience to the role, having worked at FC Barcelona for both their youth system and Barca B team.

During his time with the Catalan giants, he helped develop players of the calibre of Andres Iniesta, Victor Valdes, Gerard Pique, Bojan Krkic, Cesc Fabregas and Mikel Arteta.

He later enjoyed great success in Greece. Firstly with AEK Athens and then as assistant coach at Olympiacos before succeeding Takis Lemonis as manager and leading them to a Greek league and cup double in 2008.

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez commented: "There's a lot to do at the Academy, but we've worked hard to bring in the best people and Jose is a great appointment.

"He's worked with some of the top young talent in Spain and knows the challenges faced in bringing through players to the first team set-up. He's also got experience at the top after his success with Olympiacos and I'm delighted that he's agreed to join us."

I don't know him but I found this:

I never would have pencilled Dalglish in for that role anyway.

He needs to be more visible to the first team I think.

Think he was only in the hot seat at Olympiacos for a few games wasn't he?

Think this move just goes to show the detail that Rafa wants concentrated in the youth system. Can only be a good thing.

And about Dalglish, I agree that he should be more visible to the first team.

Nevermind, I'm sure he will bring in a wealth of experience for us. If Rafa was planning for Kenny to have this role, then we wouldn't have gotten this guy, cause probably this guy is only concentrating on the youths, and won't advise Rafa as a consultant in the first team.

Since he has overseen the likes of Iniesta, Krkic and a few others rise to prominence, we should keep our heads up because at least we've gotten someone else who can see who makes the cut.

Very much agree. I don't think this will affect Dalglish's potential arrival.

Hopefully Jose can help produce some stars. Good luck to him.

Welcome to the club Segura, hope that with your help we produce another Gerrard or Carra.
Like the majority are saying I don't think that Kenny will be affected.

I think Kenny will provide a link between Rafa and Segura.Segura's technical ability with young players and Kenny's experience of first team football at LFC should help Rafa immensely. We have now got probably the best playing management team in the world, what a future to look forward to, Well in Rafa.

Not sure. I thought he was assistant coach until the last few games of last season. Could be wrong.

This bloke is certainly no mug  !! probably the breath of fresh air that our academy needs to flourish and improve,i just hope Kenny does come back to anfield and lends his expertise too, seems a good move by Rafa and shows his desire to create first team players from academy ones which will help his transfer fee purse

I am just wondering if Rafa is trying to emulate the 'Barcelona way'. If you look at their current squad right now they have about 6 or 7 players in the starting eleven who are from their youth system.Valdes,Puyol,Pique,Xavi,Iniesta and the great Messi.

Plus their managers are usually former Barcelona players , some of them who join the club as coaches. eg Pep Guardiola.Similarity here to, Pellegrino joined us as a coach , when Sami signed for Leverkusen,Rafa said that he would be welcomed back as coach.Maybe when Stevie and Carra retire they will join as coaches too and maybe one of them might replace Rafa.
