Yeah. Something's not right though. Internal harddrives usually can't be connected at all through USB cables, can they? Makes me think it's actually not that model, or an internal harddrive at all. :P

But external hard-drives are mostly flash-memory based, so I don't see how it'd make a clicking noise when it's all on chips?

I have no idea about any of that Reslivo. Just doesn't make sense to me that that internal harddrive would have a USB cable or connection? Guess we'll find out once Adryan reads all this. I'm no expert on harddrives.

They most certainly don't have a USB connection. Just SATA power and data.

Hmmm, maybe I shouldn't have called it a USB cable but my WD hard drive is put into a StarTech enclosure > http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001F1851E/ref=oss_product

And I require to connect it to two places - one is  to the USB entry on the laptop (didnt know what to call it, hence, USB cable :P which I'm guessing it's the SATA data cable?) and another of the power adapter to the socket.

It only made the "noise" at start up which is probably common and nothing after that when the data cable is not connected. When the data cable is connected to the laptop, the noise goes on and on, off and on.

Try hooking it up directly to your motherboard - if you're not willing to do that, get somebody to do it for you.

But it sounds dead to me. And that data transfer is all wrong. How can a 3GB/sec HD transfer things at USB speed (300mb/sec)? I don't understand that.

I have a few lappy HD's in external enclosures. They all connect via USB, transfer limited to USB speed isn't a problem for me if it's only for storage.

I've got a 160GB one which has gone the way off yours, thankfully it was empty when it started clicking.

The only way I've heard of getting an old clicky hard drive resurrected for a short time is to pop it in a seal-able freezer bag and pop it in the freezer over night, the next day take it out and pop it back into the enclosure and plug it in. Before you do all that try and remember what's on the drive and prioritise what you want off first as you may not get long.

Either try that or pay a fortune to get a data recovery company to get it off for you.

      Hope this helps mate.

Maybe it's usb 3.0 I've heard that's pretty bloody fast.

It's not. The connector is white, USB 3.0 is blue.

Hmm, I may have to get someone to do it for me as I kniw nothing about hard drives.

Not sure about the transferring 3GB/sec hard drive through a 300mb/sec USB speed as the wires came together with the enclosure, which I think it's the one to make the hard drive work.

Thing is, my brother and sister were using it last week and it was working fine. Never had problems whatsoever since I got it around March 2010.

Would be really gutted if it is dead as it stores all my movies, tv shows, football matches and PC games.

Thanks for your help, though, guys. Will see what happens.

I just got a decent deal on an Iomega Ego USB 3.0 750GB £50.

Anyone else had any experience with Iomega?

With reference to my clicking internal harddrive, I contacted Amazon but they only give one year warranty so they told me to go to Western Digital straight away.

They've checked my serial number and it is still under warranty will 2013, so, that's great news. Probably won't be able to recover all the files inside it but at least it saves me from buying a new one, provided I package it properly.

Quite a hassle if you ask me as I have to but an antistatic bag to put the hard drive inside, then wrap some foam/bubble wrap around it and put it inside a cardboard box. Has to be done exactly that way or I void the warranty.

Luckily for me, I found a "Hard drive RMA packaging" set on ebay.

Okay, I've got a replacement drive already.

Just need to wait for my enclosure to arrive and then reformat the hard drive and hopefully it will worked, haha.

Anyone got tips on how to look after them drives?
