What Comes First - Manager or Players?
      May 20, 2012 11:30:35 am
I was just thinking that we need to know who our new manager will be before we can discuss transfer targets. We need to know what sort of the system the new manager will use. Also there is the small matter of the D.O.F.will he have control of transfers in and out or will it be a joint thing with the new manager.Even the ITKs will have a problem at the moment to name players we are interested in.

Manager, no? As different managing philosophies will require different targets. Saying that, if we maintain everything as we have at youth level then we should maintain 4-2-3-1. Maybe Segura could chase up some U21s while we're not doing anything else.

      Manager of course.

Why sign a player which a new manager might not want?

That was the point I was trying to make, the original heading has been changed and in my opinion the new heading does not convey what I intended.I actually think it might be a good idea to suspend the summer transfer board till a manager and DOF are appointed.

In my opinion there'll be a player or players already lined up on the say so of whoever has been "advising" FSG. The new manager will be told this at interview (without names being named perhaps) when FSG let them know how things will work. When the new manager is named so will the new signings.

Remember it's all about a "structure" and a "plan" now; the manager Head Coach is only a cog within that all important "structure". Failure by the Head Coach to produce Champions League football will see him moved on but the "structure" will remain intact. It's the only way that FSG can achieve continuity.

They might suggest that Head Coach will have a final say but the truth is I doubt he will. Transfers will be decided by the "structure"... muahahaha... muahahaha.  >:D

Structure I believe we had a good structure at Anfield in the 60s,70s and 80s when we had the best structure in the world. As one manager stepped down the next man in line was ready to step up and it was called continuity. Those men who managed us in those times would tell FSG what to do with their structure and leave the football side of the business to them.

Think you're on to something here Bad Boy Bubby. FSG are big into the whole idea of moneyball aren't they? Well from what I can gather about moneyball the manager is fairly down the list of priorities. And from what we're hearing that is the route we're heading down, the Director of Football role is apparently being broken up into new more specific roles isn't it? They're looking at AVB and Martinez, two men who seem to be tailor made for this structure. I am praying to God for a Rafa return but if there is a reason for him not to return then this structure seems like a pretty good one in my opinion, he's a man who thrives off control, hell he fought Parry the H&G long enough for some.

If we are heading down the moneyball route then managers are going to be more "disposable" for want of a better word. So to answer the question asked in the topic, then players come first. Thats not my opinion, just where I see us heading.

Too many cooks and all that

Give one man the job and one alone.

Anyone know any managers who have won trophies when someone else chose the players?

No wise cracks - like Houllier and Benitez

Think it's fairly obvious we need to sort out a new manager before new players.

Who ever comes in will know their targets and have agreed a budget I would imagine, in fact I think there's a bloke just down the road from Anfield who will have dossiers on about 3 thousand players ;)

      Surely manager first.

On structure - we did have a great structure to the club in the 70s and 80s.  This was seen when a reserve stepped up and usually fitted into the team structure with a minimum of fuss, as the first and reserve teames played the same way.
