The End of a One Club Dominance?
      May 15, 2009 06:52:37 pm
As someone pretty much neutral in these kind of situations i kind of see a different aspect than Liverpool or Man U fans. Basically i think it goes in cycles. Generally speaking Liverpool dominated much of the '70's and '80's while Man U have been dominant through the '90's and for much of this decade. 2 things for sure. Liverpool's time is nigh to win the championship again although really talking about next year which coincidentally is the start of the a new decade. The other thing is thati cannot any club dominating English football like what has happened over the last 4 decades. In years gone by there was only really 1 other club at any given time challenging the dominant club. In recent yrs the top 4 have ensured a greater threat against any domination. I think if Utd win the league this season it could be the last 3 timer for yrs.

I took the liberty of splitting this post into it's own topic, hope you don't mind, I thought it was an interesting subject that could have rapidly disappeared in the thread it was in.

I agree that I don't think over the coming couple of decades one club will manage the dominance that we had previously and United have enjoyed from the 90's onwards.

Chelsea, through the vast investment made in club and players money-wise, and ourselves through astute management and limited investment, have managed to close what was a large gulf to almost a level playing field. Arsenal are slightly farther behind IMO, but are still a force to be reckoned with and are capable of upsetting the other top sides.

In the current state of affairs, the league titles may well be separated between these four clubs for the foreseeable future. That being said, with the right signings and upcoming players, I hope Liverpool will be able to come out on top with the number of titles brought home! ;)

I think we will have enough to put an end to the mancs domestic dominance with rafa still at the helm for many seasons to come. We have definitely shown under Benitez that we are a potent force in European Football and we are getting better and better.   IN RAFA WE TRUST. YNWA

Im not sure if we'll absolutely dominate but im certain were gonna win it very soon and well be around for some time to come when the trophies are handed out at the business end of the season. Everythings in place for us and having watched us through the good and bad times i feel i can say things havent been so strong for a long time.

foreigners argue that the epl is predictable and boring, yet i strongly disagree, fortunes of clubs change so much in this league historically, in Spain, instead of a big 4 there is a big 2, barca real madrid, in France it is simply PSG, Lyon and Marseilles, germany its a big one in bayern Munich, Holland and Italy are slighty more complex but still the title is decided between 2 to 3 teams.

the epl is different, we have had the big 4, but this has only happened in the last 10 to 15 years, remember when blackburn won the league, when newcastle were 12 points clear at xmas, look at those clubs now.

england has produced more european cup winners than any other country, 5, thats us, the mancs, aston villa, forest, and i cant quite remember the 5th but im sure some one else will. the likes of spain and italy have only produced 2 or 3.

this year they say that aston villa has been the biggest threat to the big four in 10 years, but remember when everton finished 4th??. our league is the toughest in the world, the best in the world, both in the quality of players and the football they play. english teams dominated europe in the 70's first the mancs won one (well 69 i think it was technically, could be earlier) , then it was a straight fight between us and forest, (actually leeds could of been the other english team to win the european cup come to think of it), this dominace was ended by heysel, (english teams banned from entering europe, we were unfairly blamed) and this spell of english dominace in the champions league is simply english teams getting back on their feet, and it doesn't look like ending espically with the massive investment currently put into english clubs, only the the other day there were rumours of an American investing £200 million into sunderlands transfer kitty.

so all in all, slighty skewed facts aside (think it was 69 that mancs first won European cup, could be slighty earlier, possibly 64) i dont know im not a stat machine, english teams are the best in the world, because there isnt 1 or 2 clubs dominating the league, like on the continent, it simply goes in cycles of good managers coupled with large teams and large investment each having a few years at the top.

Our time is now as someone much smarter than me once said, but the mancs aren't going to disappear down the table like blackburn or newcastle, last weekends game against hull just shows the quality of youngsters that SAF has assembled, and im hoping Rafa, now he has signed a new contract and knows he's going to be here a long time, seriously invests in youth over summer.

Yes I agree, it is the end of one club dominance in the PL. Liverpool take over manoeuvrings have begun.
