      Marcell Jansen (Hamburg)
      Jul 23, 2010 05:05:06 pm
Don't think I've seen this guy play so can't comment if good or bad.

Liverpool are being linked with versatile German international Marcell Jansen as manager Roy Hodgson continues his search for a new starting left-back.

The 24-year-old has played in several positions during a career that has been solely in the Bundesliga so far, and is employed as a midfielder as much as a defender by current club Hamburg.

But Hodgson, who has extensive connections throughout the central European domestic leagues, is thought to have been tipped off that Jansen would welcome a regular role in defence - and is keen on joining Liverpool.

Jansen's capture could also help to allay the lingering fears of some of the Anfield faithful that there is a distinct lack of quality back-up to Inter Milan-bound defensive midfielder Javier Mascherano.

Hodgson has already been linked with Chelsea's Ashley Cole and former Spurs defender Reto Ziegler as he steps up his search for more left-sided players.

I know nothing about him either. Just that he seemed to come on as a sub for Boateng at the WC pretty much every game.

I wonder what position we'd want him for. He's a very attacking kind of player, he played mostly as a winger last season at HSV, so I'm not 100% on him for a LB, I don't know enough about his defensive qualities. I can see HSV letting him go, as they already have Elia for the left wing.

This is complete bullshit however, and makes no sense:

I'm glad we are finally being linked with a proper LWB.... will be a much better option than Bridge/Figueroa/Konchesky/Ziegler.  He is solid in defense, has the speed and crossing ability to be a good threat going forward and can provide us with valuable width on the left, and his size and strength make him a good threat on set pieces.  This would be an excellent signing.

This is complete bullshit however, and makes no sense:

This is because he is seen as such a versatile player.  He has played in defense, midfield, and even as a striker in his career.  His versatility would help ease the loss of Masch, although not as a straight like-for-like replacement.

So when there are fears that there isn't quality backup for Masch buying a good LB/LW is going to change that, right. All it does is 'allay the lingering fears' of not having a quality leftback, or even a leftback! It's a sh*te article, let's be honest, the only decent thing about it is the player we're linked with.

From watching him in the Euro 08 and WC 10 I see him more of a attacking left sided players than defender. Other than that I don't know too much about him.

      Jansen?

Name rings a bell, seemed more of a left mid then a left back.

Never saw him feature at world cup, haven't seen him play before after that.

I think it would a good signing getting Ashley Cole though ;)

Scored at the World Cup, no? He came in alot of Boateng, who never seemed to finish the 90 minutes.

Think he played at both LB and LM for Germany. That's all I know of the lad though, I rarely watch the Bundesliga.

Sometimes you have to put aside a players personality because they're so good on the pitch, like Robben for example. He's a complete tosser but you'd put up with that to sign him.
Ashley Cole on the other hand. He's good but there is no way I could tolerate having that mardy, obnoxious, arrogant little tw*t at LFC!

Might aswell put every Striker, Left Back and Center Midfielder who is half avalible on the Summer Transfer Board. There's hardly any quotes, hardly a reliable source and just something to build the hopes up of Liverpool fans and suggest to them that we have enough money to buy these players, but to be perfectly honest, Roy (and Purlsow :P ) will be looking for the suitable players around, at the right price, and Roy ofcourse has been around a long time and will know who to bring in, so the media can piss off speculating and let the manager make the decisions.

Inter bound when there has been no official contact other than his agent trying to get a move there. Ashely Cole, since when have we ever been linked with Ashley frigging Cole? Joke of an article this, not to mention there isn't even a single quote in it. Topic locked until there is at least a remotely half decent article linking him with us. PM a mod to get it unlocked when this happens.
