Kenny Dalglish plays down Liverpool players exodus fears

Dalglish plays down Reds exodus fears

Liverpool academy ambassador Kenny Dalglish does not expect any of Liverpool's star players to leave in the foreseeable future, insisting: "I don't think there's anybody trying to get away".

The Reds slumped to ninth in the Premier League table after their 3-1 defeat at Newcastle on Saturday, a result which leaves them with just six wins from 17 league games.

Roy Hodgson's side finished the weekend nine points adrift of a Champions League qualifying spot, and they have won one away game all season.

Such a poor run of form has seen the likes of Fernando Torres and Pepe Reina linked with a move away from Anfield, and both players have fanned those flames at times by warning the club that it must show signs of improvement.

Dalglish, a legendary former player and manager at Anfield, is not concerned about the future though, pointing to the fact that the Reds' key players all recently signed long-term deals.

Reina penned a six-year contract in April, Dirk Kuyt and Steven Gerrard both extended their agreements in 2009, while Torres is tied in until 2013.

"I wouldn't see that as a problem," Dalglish said when asked by Sky Sports News of his fears over a player exodus. "I don't think there's anybody trying to get away.

"They've all committed themselves to the club for a long time, we were delighted when they did, and I can't see any reason why they would change their minds."

Dalglish does admit that results need to improve under Hodgson, but he called for calm, insisting the former Fulham boss is guiding the club through a tough time.

"It's a transitional period for the club, Roy came in very late on in the summer, his players were away on international duty, he took a while to assess the staff, and by the time he did that he had run out of time in the transfer market.

"Through no fault of Roy Hodgson's, it is a transitional period. The takeover rightly took precedence over everything else. The club has settled down a lot more now and has some stability. Now we need to get results on the pitch.

"Roy Hodgson will decide if he needs to improve the squad. If he sees a weakness I'm sure he'll ask the owners for finance."

      Wise words from Kenny.

He's far more optimistic about our chances of keeping hold of players than I am, but then he is in the loop.

As for the running out of transfer time.  Let's not forget he was involved in £55M worth of transfer deals this summer.

However, as Kenny rightly points out 'Now we need to get results on the pitch.' I don't think there is any supporter who would disagree with that statement.

We need to spend at least £60million this summer!
If we can recoup money from the likes of Aqualani, Babel, etc then I dont see why we cant if it works out that we only lose £30m in deficit or so.
But it cant be Hodgson spending it!

Its all well and good Kenny talking about long term contracts but if a player's head is down and he doesn't believe in the manager then all a long term contract becomes .........is a ball and chain.

I would believe anything Kenny says regarding LFC. But is the talk of calm where RH is concerned mere media spin, or is he genuinely optimistic regarding Roy?

A lot of those people signed new contracts when we had Rafa as the manager and he was the guy who was setting up the team to play to all their strengths now we have a manager who is setting the team to play to no ones strengths so i can see players like Pepe , Torres and Kuyt leave in the summer unless thigns change

I don't think he is optimistic on Roy, however I don't think he see's the house on fire like many others do.

I wish I had his optimism.  I cannot see Torres staying if we don't get 4th this season.  I think his body language on the pitch shows he has serious doubts about everything Roy.

Kenny is privy to the immediates and the long term aspirations of the club, in the loop as JD posted earlier.
Consequently his comments should be taken with that in mind, he is not prone to bullshitting and if he can see light at the end of the tunnel as his comment implies we should take an optimistic view in spite of Roy's performance.

Surprised at how few comments this thread has received. Is it because its Kenny?

I take Kenny at his word, once again he is being diplomatic but if he smelled real danger and/or deceit I think he would leave the club then speak out. In this case while he may see deficiencies and a need for improvement he does not see the "evil" in the owners as some fans do, right now he is towing a company line as he is satisfied with these new stewards.

Agree AZ yet all other threads seem to be disagreeing with the king and decend into bedlam whilst this remains untouched. Very strange

I wonder if Kenny wasn't employed by the club what he would say, or what he says in private. I bet it is a hell of a lot different than what he said here.

Kenny says - Chill the F**k out and give us some faith. Fair enough, but we will all still be nervous until we see the actions during the next two transfer windows.

And I think this is exactly what he is saying and I also think being nervous about until we see action is also a very very valid concept. That being said those supporters that think LFC is falling into the Abyss and that these new owners are lying cheats unless they fire Roy this instant and drop 50+M in January need to take a deep breath and listen long and hard to what the legend is saying.

I was encouraged by hearing this from JH/TW:

JWH: (On Dalglish’s involvement). No doubt about it he needs a much more substantive role.  He is key to this franchise for the long term.

TW: We had a lovely dinner with Kenny and his wife and his son Paul. I was saying to Ian it was an honour to be with him.  I understood about half of what he said.  We know what he means to this club.  It can only be helpful.  His spirit, his tradition and his heart would be well served if we could mirror that.

The man's credibility and his thoughts concerning Mr Dalglish come into question when you consider that apparently he didn't bother to take his hearing aid with him.

Or it could have been TW emphasizing how much KD knows about football in comparison to himself.
