      DVD Ripping / Handbrake
      Dec 01, 2010 11:21:17 pm
I've started a mission to rip my DVD's to my hard drive.

I use the program Handbrake - I'm sure there are a million others.

Just wondering if everyone else does / has done this.

I'm ripping to MP4's so I can play them through my phone/TV/PS3 etc.  I'm ripping at 2000kbps and getting file sizes about 1.5Gb per 1hr 40 movie.

Am I overdoing it or is 2000kbps about right?

Try experimenting with a lower bitrate to save conversion time and storage space. 2000kbps could be too much for your phone to handle and you certainly won't get the benefits on a screen that small. I've ripped dvd to mp4 with perfect quality for an iphone/archos screen and ended up with a file size of 450mb.
2000kbps is good for larger screen viewing and is about the average which I use for 720p rips to avi.

But I may download this Handbrake, is it a free download, and if so is it PC or MAC?

      Edit: Yes to all 3.

Its taken me a LOOOOONG time to put together a solid, stable folder of programs to Rip/Burn DVD's.  I have used dozens of various programs both freeware and paid services.  But I managed to find the best ones.

For ripping get any version of DVDFab 5 or above. Its all in one ripper. Rips, Decrypts and Converts both DVD and Blu-Ray. Their are a lot of Blu-Ray decrypters but this one is very easy and SOLID.  V.5 or higher offers conversion for everything Xbox, PS3, Ipod, Zune etc...It also has multiple Disc options....Full,Split,Clone,Merge etc...  DVDFab has free versions and paid. Download the free version of V.5.  The latest version I think is V.9 or 10. But V5 is a lot easier to find the "Free" upgrade online if you look for it.

The best Burner Program I ever used was Ashampoo. It is easy to use, no complications, it burns to multiple file formats and burns Blu-Ray and HD.

For Compression Issues....I actually use the Utility which came w/ my Laptop.  Its called U-Lead DVD Factory and it has the "Fit To Disc" utility.  It is the easiest, quickest compression utility. One click and go.  It came w/ my Toshiba laptop but I think it can be downloaded.  I Included links below for these programs.

I'm gonna have a crack at this. Is Handbrake a good thing to use then?

For burning I've always used the Nero software. Works well and is professionally done.

Was just having a go at ripping a DVD with Handbrake. Estimated it was going to take 13 hours - it done %1.37 in 15 minutes!!!!

Surely it should take shorter than that?

      Bump.

I want to get some of my DVD's ripped but they're copy protected. Anyone help us out?

I'm thinking "free" and "simple to use" are going to be my tags in this post. ;)

The program I mentioned above (DVDDecrypter) can get passed the copy protection. It's not the easiest program to find these days unfortunately. It's no longer updated aswell so the newer movies might not work on it.

Like BigBob above I use Dvd shrink to rip the dvd to my desktop( automaticallytaking off the copy protection).  Its free, it's idiot proof(important for me :) ) one click and its done, and you can also strip off the parts of the DVD you don't want or need such as extras, foreign languages etc.   Once that is done you can convert it/burn it/ do what you like with it.

I have tried Handbrake but found it was a bit hit and miss. Mainly used it to reduce films size so they would go on my sons phone.

I use Convert x to DVD as my main burner. Small, fast and reliable.

Really recommend DVD SHRINK very highly Kenny if all you are looking for is ripping DVD'S quickly and more importantly simply and not having to worry about copy protection.

You can read about it and get it here mate :- http://www.filehippo.com/download_dvdshrink/
