A smoke bomb itself usually only has a flame for a second, then when the material burns it's all smoke. Can still get hot and can still burn depending on the type used.

Flares on the other hand, caustic fumes and seriously hot, they are very dangerous and anyone that uses a flare in a crowd of people like that is a proper tool.

What like all the tools on the kop in the pic below? And all the tools that made Istanbul the scene it was?

Sure, flares are dangerous and shouldn't be used in that sort of manner.

But what would I know...my family business for the last 25 years has been selling Fireworks. I've inhaled more noxious fumes and burned myself in more ways than most folks on here could imagine.

I should expand that I'm speaking to the flares like the road safety type flares. If that's not what is being used then I stand corrected, but even still...anything that will glow that bright is going to be very hot.

I'd assume that most LFC fans do their research and buy the safer option.

Like I said...safe is relative. Ever been burnt by a cigarette? Just about any flare is going to be 100 times worse than that. Just saying. I'm not trying to rain on anyone's good time, I'm just saying that personally I think that flares are a bit much, especially if we are mixing waving flares around with drinking alcohol.

there are some people that will not be at all happy until everyone who goes to a match conducts themselves as if they were at a cinema watching the sound of music.give me a smoke bomb over a plastic flag anyday

It's great for the atmosphere of the game and just put you're scarf over your face to combat the smoke , that will do the trick .

Well I was just going on about actually being on the Kop aged 15 in 94 when they were used, don't remember anyone being burnt or mis-using them, just remember seeing the footage later that night and being proud of how we'd put on a show. So good was the kop that night even the mancs local paper praised the Kop on their next day's front page!

Technically we're in danger all the time - whether it's biological, circumstantial, whatever. We're always in danger and there's always a chance of someone getting hurt no matter what position we're in. Exactly like you said, "safe is relative".

Flares pose no harm. We've had a few at Lancaster. They're essentially very bright sparklers. Gloves advised as a precaution.

      This.

Although I understand Craven Cottage has wooden floors? Could've been a hazard, I suppose.
The whole world is using smoke bombs. Most clubs in Europe do it. When Liverpool is doing then it could cause a hazard? Give it a break.

Don't get me wrong, they look brilliant (literally) and it's a hell of a sight. But as I get older I'm more of a stick in the mud I suppose. Always thinking about what if my kids were nearby and something got out of hand. Would hate to see someone hurt because of carelessness.

The smoke bombs are fun no doubt.
