      Class of '93
      May 12, 2014 03:29:50 pm
We've had the class of '92 over in scumchester so I thought I'd do a "class of '93" currently at our Academy.  These lads will all be turning 21 this year and this next season will be the last year we don't have to register them as part of the EPL and CL squads.  They were all 16 when Pep and Rodolfo arrived at the Academy so basically were the first ones to fully benefit from their coaching and training methods.

This thread is to follow their development, discuss who might make it or who might not, whether they deserve a call up to the 1st team or whether a loan might be more beneficial.

Please don't use this thread to discuss other youth players, I know there are many exciting players we're looking forward to seeing progress but we have individual players threads and also the Reserves and Academy threads to do that.

      Danny Ward - GK

      Andre Wisdom - defender
      Jakub Sokolik - defender
      Jack Robinson - defender
      Tiago Ilori - defender
      Steven Sama - defender

      Conor Coady - midfield
      Kristian Adorjan - midfield
      Joao Texeira - midfield
      Craig Roddan - midfield
      Suso - midfield

      Villyan Bijev - striker

From that list I'd say Danny Ward can replace Brad Jones as back up keeper, if Brendan doesn't have the cash to bring in someone else.  He's been on the 1st team bench a couple of times this season and it would do him good to get some cup games under his belt.

From the defenders I'd keep Wisdom, Robinson and Ilori the others will probably leave as they have rarely featured with the u21's this season and haven't stood out on the couple of loans they've had.

Midfielders are fairly obvious, keep Tex, Suso and Coady.  Conor possibly won't make it but he's had a really good loan and deserves to see what he can do.  I'd have loved to keep Adorjan, such a classy player but I fear he doesn't have the pace Brendan wants.  Roddan has all but left after being told early in the year he could find another club.

Bijev is a strange one.  He joined us from California in 2011 but has rarely been at the Academy as he's been loaned out ever since.  He's featured in a few u21 games recently as his last loan ended in Feb/March but he hasn't really impressed.

We are desperate for strikers though as our u21's have been doing a chelsea most of the season, playing without them.  We have scored 55 goals in 21 games though  ;)

In case some of you are wondering Alberto, Flanno, Yesil and Ngoo will all have to be registered for the new season if they stay.  Ngoo will leave definitely, Alberto and Yesil, if he ever recovers from his ACL injuries, will probably go on loan so only Flanno will take up one of the 25 man squad places.

Edit - Bijev has left the Club since I posted this.

Edit - Roddan will leave this week.

      Few updates.

Steven Sama has now left for Bochum.

Jakub Sokolik isn't listed on the official site as out on loan, yet he played for Southend Utd at the weekend in the playoffs and did very well even if they didn't win.

Armin Hodzic has reportedly signed a 5 year deal with Zagreb.  I'm gutted about this one, problems with his work permits meant he's barely been at the Academy yet at only 19 he could have had a couple of years to develop before making a final decision on whether to keep him.  Ah well!

Coady's an interesting one. Never was a big fan of him and he started his loan at Sheffield United pretty poorly. However, under Nigel Clough he's looked a totally different player and he's really impressed me. Just can't see him getting enough chances here though.

I watched the Shamrock game yesterday Chats and it appears he played quite well.  He always seemed to look and pass forward first, had a couple of nice through balls which didn't quite come off but all in all he had a positive game, I thought.

Maybe he doesn't have what it takes to stay with us but he'll have a very good career wherever he goes.

I'll get the pedantic bit out of the way first.
Ilori shouldn't be on that list.

Barring Wisdom, who we've seen perform the season before last,
our midfield looks most likely to make the step up.

Coady, Teixeira and Suso really need to get the right loans next
season as I can't see them getting anything like enough game
time to develop if they stay.

Coady the most ready to step into a regular first team role,
but there's something about Teixeira. He has a great eye for
a pass. Not sure on Suso. Sterling's arrived and Ibe doesn't look
far behind. I think if we get a good offer Suso will be sold.

Coady only has a year to run on his contract so if he's going out on loan again we'll need to extend it.  Not sure about Tex contract but he could be in the same boat.

I think if we get a good offer Suso will be sold.

Unfortunately I think so too mate.  He's got a long way to go to displace Cou and Raheem and I don't think he's got it in him yet to challenge Hendo and Allen for their positions.  It's a shame because so much has changed whilst he's been away on loan, he's possibly missed his chance.

However, if he has a fantastic pre season we could decide to extend his contract and find a better loan deal for him for next season and take it from there.

Hi Debs, where did you hear this? Was he sold or as usual just let go? I'm bleedin bouncing if it is the case. I've been following some of his exploits this year and have been thoroughly impressed. He was his teams leading goalscorer this year with 14 in 28 appearances. Had plenty of rave reviews from Bosnia. I'd have preferred him to Aspas this season.

Not sure of Suso's prospects here. I like many others on here I feel that if a decent offer comes in, we may be tempted to take it. But there again how do you quantify a decent offer for someone like Suso? I just get the impression that Brendan favours Teixeira that little bit more.

Teixeira is regularly playing in the deeper role, which suits where we need players right now.
That alone could be why he edges Suso.

I don't think we gave him away, he still had 3 years on his contract but it looks like the work permit issues weren't going to get sorted any time soon and we've decided to sell.

I'm gutted same as you mate, I've been following his progress too and had hoped we could finally get him here to work with.  We have such a shortage of strikers coming through and now we've even less.

A bit more info regarding Armin Hodzic and quite honestly it seems like a royal cluster fu*K.

Dinamo Zagreb sign promising Liverpool youngster Armin Hodzic
After European side Dinamo Zagreb have agreed to sign Liverpool youngster Armin Hodzic, Scott Taylor (@ScottTaylorUK) brings you all the news regarding Liverpoolā€™s latest departure.

After spending two years on loan at Bosnian Premier League side FK Zeljeznicar, Liverpool striker Armin Hodzic today completed a permanent move to Croatian side Dimano Zagreb. The 19 year old forward had an outside chance of making Safet Susicā€™s preliminary 30 man squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup representing Bosnia and Herzegovina. After finally being granted a work permit to play in the United Kingdom, it looked like Hodzic would return to Liverpool and play a large part in the Under 21s campaign in the 2014/15 season, but that wasnā€™t the case as he signed a 5 year deal with the European side that would keep him at the club until the summer of the 2018/19 season. He has only featured for the Reds once, in a friendly in January but he made a significant impact when he scored 2 goals in the 4-2 victory.
It wasnā€™t just in England where Hodzic had a habit of making and impact and scoring goals. He had just finished his most successful season in his career as he scored an impressive 14 goals for FK Zeljeznicar and as a result was the second top goalscorer in the Bosnian Premier League.
Despite his increasing interest throughout Europe, Liverpool intended to keep hold of him as they were planning on sending him back out on loan to the Belgian Premier League to aid his development as it is clear just by looking at the stats that Hodzic is too talented for the Bosnian Premier League.

Here is what Hodzic had to say about his move to Dinamo Zagreb:

ā€œI am happy the new season to play for Dinamo and Iā€™m very pleased that leaders of the club recognized me in reinforcements for the best club in the region. I can only say that I will surely field always try to give the maximum, I will attempt to justify the confidence that the club has given me and I hope to have their games to entertain the fans, and successfully participate in Dinamo good games in the future.ā€

The move came about when Dinamo scouts, including Dinamo executive director Zdravko Mamic, attended the Sarajevo derby earlier this month and were impressed by the young strikerā€™s performance. The side he will be joining has a reputation of producing stars of the future, including Alen Halilovic who recently moved to La Liga giants Barcelona.

As back up goalie, I suppose he could do a job but I think we'll either keep hold of Jones or bring a new understudy in. He'll be with the reserves next year or fu**ed off.

If Derby are promoted (and I really hope they are because I can't stand QPR) then I think we should loan Norm back to them. If they don't, then I'd happily keep him here and let him get a few more games under his belt with us or we find a Premiership club willing to loan him. I don't really wanna see him spend another 12 months in the Championship.

Probably isn't gonna make it, probably be sold in the summer. We're quite set at centre half as it is and with Ilori, Coates, Sama and Lloyd Jones all ahead of him (in my opinion) then there isn't much hope of him making it here.

Really rate this lad, love his attitude and the passion he has for playing for us. I know some on here got a right cob on with the way he told Suarez to piss off in the FA Cup last season but I loved it. He had the balls to say it to our superstar. We're not blessed with the greatest left backs here either and I thought Robbo could make that position his own. However, if Cole arrives, Enrique returns to full fitness and Flanno continues to improve I don't see where Jack's gonna play. Maybe one more season on loan, otherwise cut our ties and say ta ra.

Don't know how he's done on loan this year but he's obviously a lad Brendan rates. You don't spend seven or eight million on a young kid you don't rate. So with Toure leaving (hopefully) and potentially Agger, I think there's a strong chance Ilori will make the grade. Whether he's good enough has yet to be seen. If Skrtel or Sakho have an iffy year and Ilori does impress, he could even become the first team regular.

Has the ability to make it and wins a lot of headers which is were our defenders let themselves down in my opinion (especially inside our own box). Had a sniff around the first team without actually getting onto the pitch. Probably one we should loan out this year to see how he fares but like with Sokolik there's probably just too many ahead of him for him to have a strong chance of making it here.

No secret that I rate this lad highly. Always looked too good for the reserve level, didn't do badly in the limited game time he got with the first team, has thoroughly impressed at Brammall Lane with Sheffield United and even adapted his game to play a more attacking role than the holding role he fulfilled here. Potentially could make it, if we retain this diamond formation. A long term injury to either Stevie or Lucas and we'll need somebody to play at the base. So it's either splashing out millions or giving Conor a chance. Deep down though, I think he'll be sold in the summer. Possibly to the Blades or a Championship side.

Don't think he'll make it, probably gone in the summer.

Really like this kid. Got all the attributes needed to become a real quality central midfielder. Didn't looked phased in the few games he did play with the first team this year. And the players trusted his ability as well by giving him the ball rather than bypassing him. More games next year and maybe a loan move in January if he's not quite getting the opportunities here. Don't want him stifling his progress in the reserves like so many others have, he needs to start playing first team football a bit more now.

I don't see the hype with him unfortunately. When he did play for us, I never seen anything in him that shouted future star. In the reserves he looked boss, like Coady he was too good for that level. But at the first team, he just didn't cut it. I don't know how he's got on in Spain, whether he's been a success or not but I wouldn't be rushing him back here. Coutinho, Sterling and probably Ibe with maybe a potential signing or two to play in the attacking midfield positions leaves a very limited time for Suso to play. I don't think he's good enough to play centrally or at the base of the diamond either. Probably be loaned back out for the up coming season or even sold.

makes me feel I should watch more of the reserve games. I found out you can just turn up and watch the games at the academy, I'm gonna start going because it's like a mile away from where I live.

Amazing. What I wouldn't give to have that luxury. I'm happy the reds are coming to Fenway again this summer, but I think all the time about how it's going to make me feel, when I see my first game at Anfield. Got to time the trip right so there's a home cl game and a home pl game for me to catch within a few days.

That's fantastic that my enthusiasm for the Academy and our youth players has motivated you to start watching them live mate.  If I lived closer I'd be there for every game I could get to.

You are inspirational; what can I say.
Nah.. hey, you are a very good fan because you look at the youth and think about the future.
Hope I can just waltz in to the academy games, I'm still not sure if that's even a thing that can be done so easily. The fella over the road told my dad he just goes up there and watches the games. so... who knows

I know some games are played behind closed doors so only family allowed but I believe you can just turn up for most games.
