Tommy Smith book signing (13th Dec 07 - Speke)
      Dec 09, 2007 04:45:24 pm

Liverpool legend Tommy Smith will be at Borders on Speke retail park this Thursday 13th December from about 6.30 signing copies of his new book.

Great to see the 'Anfield Iron' getting over his heart attack which I'm sure knocked him for six.

Just seen this on his new book.

      Synopsis
Footballing legend Tommy Smith played with Liverpool for eighteen years from 1960 to 1978. During this time he won almost every honour club football has to offer, 4 First Division Championship medals, 2 FA Cup winners medals, 2 European Cups, 2 UEFA Cups, 1 European Super Cup and 5 Charity Shields. He captained Liverpool for a number of seasons and played under both Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley, widely regarded as two of the greatest managers British football has ever produced. In that time he was forged into one of football's original hard men, Shankly once said, 'Tommy Smith wasn't born, he was quarried.'A uniquely tough but thoroughly fair player (in spite of his fame for the most punishing of tackles), he was sent off only once and booked only twice, on all three occasions for dissent. In this fascinating autobiography, Tommy gives us the inside story of a whole host of footballing legends - Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley, Ron Yeats, Kevin Keegan, Matt Busby, Brian Clough, George Best, Jimmy Greaves, Bobby Moore, Denis Law and Pele, as told by one of their own. A nostalgic view of a golden age of English football, this is a window on the glory days of Liverpool. It is also the story of the time before the game was all about the money and Tommy has a lot to say about football today, so he's not changed. As Bob Paisley once said, 'Tommy doesn't tackle opponents so much as break them down for resale as scrap.'

Cheers JD and Tommo. Hopefully I might be able to make it down to Speke on Thursday. If I do, I'll take a pic or two as well as Graham.

I went down last night, got there about 5.45, I have to say it was a very poor show by Borders on Speke retail park, there was no posters out saying Tommy Smith was coming, I asked at the desk where he was signing the books, they were not sure, and had to find out, they showed me to where he was going, this then was 6pm, then about 6.10 they started to put some small posters up, I would have thou rt they would have had big posters up on there windows days and days before letting people know Tommy was coming down.

But all that aside, Tommy came about 6.20, so with not many people about it meant I could have a good talk to Tommy, and I did, I must say I was like a little kid meeting one of my hero's.
He looked good for a man who has been so ill, but not the Tommy as we new him, if you know what I mean.

I got two books one for me and one for my lad, and Tommy signed them both, so I'm made up.

Now the bad part, asked the wife to take some pics, she did not put her glasses on to take them, so I have now 8 pics of half of Tommys head, half of mine, a bit of Tommys hand but all of mine, even got one of I think of Tommys feet.
So sorry no pics from me, but I am so glad we went, it was just great to meet him.  ;D

I actually heard this on the tannoy at Borders last week and they said from 6.30 so it surprises me that when you got there they are all so unsure.

Glad you had a chat with him though.  And never ask a woman to do a man's job. ;)
